Coastal Carolina University identifies student found dead in dorm room Sunday evening

Three days after his death, Coastal Carolina University released the name of a student who was found dead inside his freshman dorm room Sunday evening by family members.

Devonte Grant, 18, died of natural causes, according to the release, which was sent to students Wednesday evening.

“In his first semester on campus, Devonte was very excited about theatre and was recently cast to be in the spring theatre production of The Green Bird,” the release states. “He was also very active on campus as a member of the African American Initiative for Men (AAIM), Coastal Activities Board (CAB), Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), People Respecting Individual Diversity and Equality (PRIDE), Students Navigating and Advising Peers (SNAP), and Upstage.”

Grant will be memorialized during a CCU Memorial Program on April 13, 2023. The release also recommended students reach out to counseling services, at 843-349-2305.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office had not identified the student up until the release. CCU explained that the decision to withhold his identity was in collaboration with family.

“This allowed the family to complete notifications and grieve the loss of Devonte,” Travis Overton, CCU Chief of Staff, said in the release.

SLED is investigating Grant’s death, in accordance with South Carolina law. No other details about his death were provided.
