CLT could see more snow ... or maybe not. Another winter storm possible this week.

Again?

For a third straight weekend, Charlotte could see snow Friday night, but then again, it might not see any at all, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Tuesday.

It’s just too early in the week to say for certain how much if any precipitation an upper-level weather system could bring to the central and Piedmont areas of North Carolina, including snow, according to meteorologist Jake Wimberley of the NWS office in Greer, S.C.

Charlotte could see wintry weather for 3rd straight weekend? Snow kidding.

A 40% chance of snow showers is forecast Friday night for areas northwest of Charlotte, including parts of Alexander and Caldwell counties, and a 30% chance in Catawba County, according to the NWS forecasts for those counties at noon Tuesday.

There’s only a 30% chance of rain, with some of it mixing with snow after 10 p.m. before gradually ending. Otherwise, skies should be mostly cloudy before sunshine is expected to return Saturday, the NWS forecast shows.

“At this point, it’s not likely that any snow will happen, and if it does, it would be less than an inch” in Charlotte, the meteorologist told the Observer early Tuesday.

Charlotte snow record

Charlotte broke a 39-year-old record when 1.9 inches of snow fell during Friday night’s storm, the National Weather Service reported Saturday. The previous record for a Jan. 21 snowfall was set in 1983, when 0.5 inches fell.

The record snowfall for Jan. 28 has stood since 1899 at 5.5 inches, NWS meteorologist Doug Outlaw said.

The record for most snow on a single day in January is 12.1 inches, set on Jan. 7, 1988, according to Outlaw.

February averages the most number of snowfall days in Charlotte — 1.7 — but December sees the most total snow on average, at 0.79 inches, WeatherAtlas.com figures show.

Where snow is likely in NC

The chance of another winter blast is likelier in Eastern North Carolina, meteorologists in the Newport/Morehead NWS office said on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

“We are monitoring the potential for accumulating snowfall across portions of eastern North Carolina Friday night into Saturday,” meteorologists in the Newport/Morehead office said on Twitter. “Snowfall amounts and timing details will come into better focus over the next day or so.”

The N.C. Emergency Management Office likewise warned Tuesday of the approaching storm for Eastern N.C.

“Rain may transition to a wintry mix behind the front as temperatures fall below freezing,” office officials said on Twitter.

Say it ain’t snow! Winter weather is a possibility for the third-straight weekend.

Charlotte weather: It’ll get colder

After an expected high of 57 degrees Tuesday, Charlotte could see temperatures plummet once again, with highs in the mid-40s forecast through the rest of the work week, according to the NWS forecast.

Highs should bottom out at 37 degrees Saturday before climbing to 42 Sunday and 49 Monday, the forecast shows.

Lows are expected to drop from 34 degrees early Wednesday to 23 early Thursday, 29 early Friday, 26 early Saturday and 19 early Sunday, according to the NWS.

January is the coldest month of the year in Charlotte, with an average high of 48.7 degrees and an average low of 33.3 degrees, according to WeatherAtlas.com.
