Chinese ‘super buffet’ doubling in size in Johnson County, plans new Kansas City spot

Locally owned Joy Wok Super Buffet Hibachi Sushi is setting up for some big changes in 2022.

First it will close its longtime location in Overland Crossing, at 11920 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, on Dec. 31. It will then relocate and double in size — to 15,000 square feet — at 12631 Metcalf, formerly home of Plaza III the Steakhouse. A May opening is scheduled.

Joy Wok said it is relocating to make way for Whole Foods Market (which is relocating its store a half-mile away to Overland Crossing).

In addition, Joy Wok is taking a 6,000-square-foot space in the redeveloped Wornall Village shopping center, 8406 Wornall Road, for a September opening.

Joy Wok, which opened in Overland Park in 2010, also has a Northland location at 8320 N. Church Road, and a restaurant in Maryville, Missouri.

Its buffet has more than 150 items, including sesame chicken, orange beef or chicken, spicy beef and scallops, pan fried noodles, spring rolls, and fried or steamed dumplings.
