Chiefs WRs: JuJu Smith-Schuster returns to practice, but Kadarius Toney still sidelined

The Chiefs had some good news to share on the injury front Thursday ahead of Sunday’s road game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who didn’t practice Wednesday because of an illness, was returning to work, the team announced.

Smith-Schuster, who has 49 catches for 653 yards and two touchdowns, enters Week 13’s game in Cincinnati as the Chiefs’ second-leading receiver.

The Chiefs later in the afternoon designated Smith-Schuster as a full participant in practice.

While getting Smith-Schuster back on the field is a positive development for the Chiefs, they continue to practice without wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who is nursing a hamstring injury that he suffered in Week 11.

Including the three on-field sessions he missed last week, Toney has now missed five straight practices. He didn’t play last weekend and his availability for this Sunday’s game is unknown.

The Chiefs were also practicing Thursday without running back Jerick McKinnon (hamstring). It’s McKinnon’s second straight missed practice.

The Chiefs said the rest of the team would be on the practice field, meaning the following players — all of whom were listed on Wednesday’s injury report — were expected to practice in some capacity:

  • Safety Juan Thornhill (calf)

  • left guard Joe Thuney (ankle)

  • wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (shoulder)

  • safety Bryan Cook (wrist)

  • defensive end Carlos Dunlap (foot)

  • offensive lineman Lucas Niang (knee)

  • cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (calf)

  • cornerback Jaylen Watson (hand)

  • wide receiver Justin Watson (knee)

  • safety Deon Bush (elbow)

The Chiefs later in the afternoon designated Bush as a limited participant for a second straight day. All other players put in a full practice.
