Chicago P.D. star Patrick Flueger says you'll have to wait until next season for a Burzek resolution

It has been a long journey for Chicago P.D.'s Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger). The on-again, off-again couple has been one of the series' central romances for years, and fans are constantly wondering if they'll ever get their act together for good.

Season 9 of the NBC drama has seen them master co-parenting — and even share a kiss — and yet, they're still not officially together. Most recently, Ruzek made a big move by buying his childhood home for Burgess and Makalya (Ramona Edith Williams). It wasn't a romantic gesture — he simply wanted to give it to them — but for shippers, it also wasn't not a romantic gesture.

"You saw him leave off with the resolve of, 'This is what I want to do, this makes me feel like I'm contributing. Even if you cut me out entirely, at least I know I gave her this thing that was such a positive aspect of my life,'" Flueger tells EW. "I love that speech that they wrote for him talking about the memories, and there is some resolve in knowing that came from the heart. I think he meant what he said: He's not trying to move in, he's legitimately trying to provide and put something out there that he thinks would be really good for Makayla as she grows up."

But that still doesn't answer the question of what comes next for the co-parenting non-couple. And unfortunately, it doesn't sound like the season 9 finale will provide that answer either. With everything going on with Anna (Carmela Zumbado) and Voight's (Jason Beghe) breakdown, it seems romance is going to take a backseat.

"There's smatterings of conversation here and there, but I won't lie to you, you're going to have to wait until next season," Flueger says of resolution for the couple, adding, "I'm going to have to wait until next season! They don't tell us anything!"

At this point, we've waited so long, what's a couple more months?

Chicago P.D. airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
