Chelsea target Matthijs de Ligt or Nathan Ake deal this week but face Bayern Munich transfer fight

Chelsea hope to complete the signing of one of their two main defensive targets this week as they continue negotiations over Nathan Ake and Matthijs de Ligt.

The Blues are considering a move for Cristiano Ronaldo amid uncertainty over his future at Manchester United, but the need to sign at least one new centre-back is a priority for Thomas Tuchel before the squad fly to America on Saturday for their pre-season tour.

Chelsea need to rebuild their defence this summer after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers and want to act swiftly on Dutch defenders Ake and De Ligt.

They could face serious competition from Bayern Munich for De Ligt, with the German champions confident they can hijack their bid for the 22-year-old.

Bayern do not want to be drawn into a bidding war with their wealthier Premier League rivals and have instead worked on convincing the player to reject a move to Chelsea.

Bayern first tried to sign De Ligt from Ajax in 2019, with coach Julien Nagelsmann and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic now said to have personally contacted the player.

Chelsea have had numerous approaches for De Ligt turned down by Juventus, who initially asked for his £103million release clause to be paid in full.

The Serie A club have since softened their stance but rejected potential swap deals involving both Timo Werner and Jorginho.

Juventus want a fee paid in full but are willing to negotiate on the price, with De Ligt seemingly unwilling to renew his contract that expires in 2024.

Discussions regarding a return to Stamford Bridge for Ake are thought to be more advanced.

Manchester City want to recoup the £41m they spent on Ake in 2020 and their valuation of the 27-year-old is not expected to be a problem in talks with Chelsea. The main issue holding up any deal is City’s desire to sign a replacement for the player whom Chelsea sold to Bournemouth for £20m in 2017.

Chelsea have been in contact with City over several players this summer and also hope to finalise the signing of Raheem Sterling before they fly out to the States this weekend.

Chelsea are weighing up a move for Ronaldo after he told United he wants to leave to play in the Champions League and fight for major trophies. Ronaldo has missed the start of pre-season training due to “family reasons” and it is unclear when he will return.
