Chelsea FC 7-0 Norwich LIVE! Mount hat-trick - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Chelsea FC 7-0 Norwich LIVE! Mount hat-trick - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Chelsea vs Norwich - LIVE!

Mason Mount notched a hat-trick as Chelsea put lowly Norwich to the sword 7-0 in a hopelessly one-sided top versus bottom mismatch at Stamford Bridge.

Ben Chilwell also continued his fine recent scoring run on Saturday, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James similarly on target as the rampant Blues notched some quality efforts and Max Aarons netting an unfortunate own goal in an emphatic demolition.

The huge win - their biggest to date under Thomas Tuchel - takes Chelsea four points clear at the top of the Premier League before the rest of the weekend’s fixtures, with Liverpool facing Manchester United tomorrow and Manchester City battling Brighton later on.

Winless Norwich remain rooted to the foot of the table with just two points to their name from nine games so far this term and a woeful -21 goal difference, with their prospects of escaping the drop looking exceedingly bleak before the clocks have even gone back.

Daniel Farke reaction

15:07 , George Flood

"Chelsea played a top-class game.

"Before the game people were saying we had no chance but our decision-making was not sharp enough and we were too slow and not at this world-class level competitively.

"There is no need to punish the players more, they are down already, as the decisions on the pitch were brutal. The red card didn't help.

"But I told the players before the game that whatever happens today, whether we are celebrating like hell or had a bad day at the office, it is not a season-defining game for us.

"It is not good for our confidence but the games where we have to win the points are other games."

Tuchel on Mount

15:05 , George Flood

“No matter what the coach says and how many opportunities you have, the offensive guys need goals to feel happy and confident and he waited too long and it is good he got goals today.

"It is not a matter of now he is fresh and yesterday he was tired, we are in a process and it is normal. I agree today he looked fresh again but we need to be careful with these players who play an important role in national teams and who have a lot of competitions.

"Sometimes it is normal that you feel more fatigued if you don't have a break from internationals."

Thomas Tuchel reaction

14:59 , George Flood

"We had a good performance and put in a lot of effort with high pressing and many ball wins and created a lot of chances and were very precise today with the finishing.

"We needed luck and momentum also but it was a very good game.

"But it is only one game. Fair enough you get all the credit, but it is one game and we are back here again on Tuesday trying again."

Chelsea 7-0 Norwich

An absolute, utter demolition. The gulf in class was incredible.

Chelsea extend their lead at the summit to four points with a healthy boost for their goal difference.

Winless Norwich remain rooted to the foot of the table, with their own GD and already fragile confidence taking a battering.

They look down in October.

GOAL! Chelsea 7-0 Norwich | Mason Mount 91'

14:18 , George Flood

91 mins: Mount completes his hat-trick in stoppage time!

It’s a great ball around the corner from Ziyech and Loftus-Cheek runs through, teeing up his fellow midfielder for a maiden senior Chelsea treble.

Initial suspicions of offside, but the goal stands. The Blues have SEVEN!

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

14:16 , George Flood

Barkley really wanted to take the second penalty. Mount insisted he was sticking to it and fired it down the middle.

Krul still got a touch. Have to say neither spot-kick was convincing.

GOAL! Chelsea 6-0 Norwich | Mason Mount 85'

14:13 , George Flood

85 mins: That effort down the middle from Mount wasn’t convincing either, but it bounces in off the shin of the unfortunate Krul.

Barkley really wanted to take it, but was denied.

Chelsea have a sixth.

Penalty to Chelsea

14:11 , George Flood

82 mins: Rudiger passionately claims handball after his shot is blocked by Normann.

Nothing is given initially, but referee Madley is sent to have a look at the pitchside monitor by VAR Michael Oliver and then quickly points to the spot.

Mount’s poor penalty is saved by Krul, who was off his line early! It will need to be retaken.

Nothing at all going for Norwich today.

14:08 , George Flood

80 mins: Two top saves in quick succession from Krul as the shots continue to rain down from Chelsea, with Barkley and then Ziyech denied.

14:06 , George Flood

77 mins: Ziyech is in the mood to make an impression here.

A clever ball to the back post went narrowly wide a little earlier and he’s now just bent a curling strike inches past the post.

A stinging Loftus-Cheek drive is also parried by Krul after a lovely bit of skill from the Chelsea midfielder.

14:01 , George Flood

72 mins: This has long since developed into pure target practice for Chelsea, with Barkley dragging a shot wide and Chilwell flashing another narrowly over the top.

That fifth Chelsea goal was officially credited as an Aarons OG, by the way.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

14:00 , George Flood

You suspect Havertz would have wanted to stay on and try to get a goal against such limited opposition.

But it is understandable Tuchel wants to protect him, given the injuries to Lukaku and Werner.

Still, an opportunity missed.

13:58 , George Flood

68 mins: Loftus-Cheek replaced Jorginho a few minutes ago and now Hudson-Odoi and Havertz are replaced by Ziyech and Barkley respectively.

With Gibson sent off, Norwich send on teenage defender Omobamidele for Sargent.

RED CARD | Ben Gibson

13:54 , George Flood

64 mins: ... and worse.

Gibson stupidly takes out James and is rightly shown a second yellow card. Pure frustration.

Reeling Norwich are 5-0 down and now with 10 men. There are still more than 25 minutes to go here!

GOAL! Chelsea 5-0 Norwich | Max Aarons OG 63'

13:51 , George Flood

63 mins: This just keeps getting worse for Norwich.

Hudson-Odoi’s cross from the left is deflected into Krul by Aarons and the Dutchman can’t keep it out.

I think that’ll go down as an own goal.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

13:49 , George Flood

It always looked like coming - even if Norwich have been better this half.

It was another really well worked goal - but the amount of space Chelsea are being afforded is criminal.

Chilwell, meanwhile, just cannot stop scoring.

GOAL! Chelsea 4-0 Norwich | Ben Chilwell 57'

13:44 , George Flood

57 mins: He can’t stop scoring!

Norwich are dispossessed down their left flank and Chelsea quickly pour forward once more, working it very nicely indeed through James, Jorginho and Mount.

A pass is fizzed into Chilwell, who cuts across the ball and whips it into the bottom corner - no chance for Krul again.

Yet another fine Chelsea goal.

13:43 , George Flood

55 mins: Norwich are being cut apart very easily again now and Gibson is in the book for bringing down Havertz.

13:42 , George Flood

53 mins: A chance for Norwich!

A bizarre pass back from Chilwell deflects off Pukki and is picked up by Rashica, who is denied by a terrific Mendy block.

The excellent Mendy bellows at his defence. He doesn’t want his clean sheet spoiled by lapses in concentration like that.

13:40 , George Flood

52 mins: Loftus-Cheek and Ziyech are out warming up for Chelsea.

Norwich give the ball away so cheaply well inside their own half and Havertz tries to capitalise, with his shot blocked behind by Hanley.

The subsequent corner is punched away by Krul before being lofted clear.

13:38 , George Flood

50 mins: Norwich are trying to show more attacking intent early in this second half, but Chelsea are defending sharply on the very rare occasions they have been called into action.

Rudiger tidies up by the byline and Thiago Silva then makes a perfectly-timed sliding challenge.

Incredible Kovacic pass

Two Norwich changes at half-time

13:35 , George Flood

Back underway at the Bridge, with beleaguered Norwich making two half-time substitutions.

Giannoulis and Lees-Melou have made way for Manchester United loanee Brandon Williams and Kosovan forward Milot Rashica.

Chelsea 3-0 Norwich

The Blues have been rampant and should probably be ahead by more.

Norwich woeful. They are in dire trouble this season.

13:18 , George Flood

45 mins: Into added time at the end of the first half as Lees-Melou has his name taken by referee Andy Madley for a frustrated challenge.

13:16 , George Flood

43 mins: Three almost becomes four before the interval as Chilwell and James combine to set up Mount, who curls a tremendous effort agonisingly over the bar.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-0 Norwich | Reece James 41'

13:13 , George Flood

41 mins: Chelsea continue to pile on the misery... and it’s another lovely goal!

James is played in behind perfectly by Mount and ends up dinking wonderfully over Krul to make it 3-0 before half-time.

Norwich have been woeful, but all of Chelsea’s goals have been superb.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

13:11 , George Flood

As good as Chelsea have been, Norwich have been awful. They can’t get close.

With a bit more accuracy up front from the hosts, this game could be anything.

13:11 , George Flood

38 mins: Closely shackled by Hanley, Havertz has been quiet for Chelsea in this first half.

He has a sight of goal there from a tough angle, but Krul is alert to snuff out the danger.

13:08 , George Flood

35 mins: A little warning sign for Chelsea as Hudson-Odoi is caught in possession by Kabak, who then fizzes a shot over the crossbar.

Mendy understandably not happy with Hudson-Odoi there and comes to the edge of his box to exchange a few words.

Some encouragement for Norwich at least. Was that their first shot of the afternoon?

13:07 , George Flood

13:04 , George Flood

31 mins: Cries of “shoot” from the Chelsea faithful as Rudiger again shows his attacking nous by moving clear of Sargent and then driving in a shot that loops up high off Kabak and is safely claimed by Krul.

Rudiger was running in after that... he wants a goal!

13:02 , George Flood

29 mins: Chelsea are on the charge again and it’s Hudson-Odoi leading the way as he takes on former Liverpool loanee Ozan Kabak.

The ball is eventually rolled square into the box, with Mount’s drive held by Krul.

13:01 , George Flood

27 mins: A flash of intent from Norwich after another promising run from Greek left-back Giannoulis.

But a cross into the Chelsea box is headed clear.

Gibson has just committed a very robust challenge indeed on Mount, who felt the full force of that and can’t believe he hasn’t been awarded a free-kick.

12:59 , George Flood

25 mins: Chelsea force another corner that is hastily cleared by Norwich, who desperately need to get hold of the ball for any sort of sustained period.

12:55 , George Flood

22 mins: Chelsea are dominating and even showboating somewhat here, with a nice bit of attacking play from Rudiger to shift the ball past Sargent and get a cross in.

Norwich clear their lines on this occasion, but it keeps coming straight back. They cannot get a foothold.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

12:54 , George Flood

That was a quite magnificent pass from Kovacic - right into Hudson-Odoi’s path.

He still needed to provide the finish, but it would have been a travesty if that pass had been wasted.

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Norwich | Callum Hudson-Odoi 18'

12:49 , George Flood

18 mins: Game over already?

Sargent is crowded out at one end before Chelsea are again afforded way too much space to launch a decisive break.

Kovacic produces a terrific pass that splits the Norwich defence and finds Hudson-Odoi, who races clear and provides a composed to finish to beat Krul.

Chelsea 2-0 up inside 20 minutes. This could be any score.

Like Mount, Hudson-Odoi is off the mark for the 2021/22 campaign.

12:47 , George Flood

14 mins: Hanley pulls up a little lame after having to show quick reflexes to beat Havertz to thread a pass back to his own goalkeeper.

Norwich show promise with a subsequent attack, though it’s scuppered as a free-kick is conceded.

Chilwell not moving too freely for Chelsea now.

12:45 , George Flood

11 mins: Chelsea piling on more pressure after the goal, with Norwich struggling to string three passes together as it stands.

This could be a long afternoon for the Premier League’s bottom club.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

12:44 , George Flood

Brilliant goal from Chelsea - and from the man who said he was due one. Mount’s low drive from about 20 yards left Krul with no chance.

Good work from Hudson-Odoi in the build-up and the lay-off from Jorginho, but it was all about Mount’s strike.

(Getty Images)

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Norwich | Mason Mount 8'

12:39 , George Flood

8 mins: A fine strike from Mount!

It’s good, positive play from Hudson-Odoi down the left and his initial cross is headed away by Gibson.

But it only reaches as far as Jorginho, who tees up Mount for an arrowing low drive from 20 yards that fizzes into the corner and leaves Krul with no chance.

That’s the England midfielder’s first goal of the season. A super shot.

12:38 , George Flood

5 mins: Rudiger’s shot forces Krul into an awkward save before Norwich push forward and James has a momentary lapse of concentration before shiedling the ball out play for a Mendy goal kick.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

12:37 , George Flood

Tuchel is absolutely livid with Hudson-Odoi. He wanted him to get up the pitch quicker and is furious with his final ball.

As soon as that break happened, he was out of his seating and yelling at Hudson-Odoi to get forward.

Only the start, but in a game where the winger really needs to make an impression, so far he’s not done the best job of it.

12:36 , George Flood

4 mins: Another dangerous early moment for Norwich as Jorginho takes a nice touch and has more than enough time to loft an enticing ball to the back post that just evades Hudson-Odoi with Havertz also lurking.

12:35 , George Flood

3 mins: Max Aarons flashes a ball across Chelsea’s six-yard box, but Kovacic quickly wins possession and sets the hosts forward on the counter-attack.

A pass is squeezed out to the left of the Norwich box to Havertz, whose low squared cross is intercepted.

Kick-off

12:32 , George Flood

We are underway at Stamford Bridge!

A comfortable afternoon ahead for Chelsea, or can Norwich spring a shock?

Matthew Harding tribute

12:31 , George Flood

A banner reading, “Matthew Harding always loved, never forgotten” is unveiled in the stand that bears his name as the whole stadium joins in with a pre-match minute’s applause in memory of the former Chelsea vice-chairman, who tragically died in a helicopter crash 25 years ago yesterday.

A chant of, “There’s only one Matthew Harding,” also rings out. A lovely tribute.

12:27 , George Flood

Here come the teams at Stamford Bridge.

Jorginho leads out Chelsea with Azpilicueta on the bench, with Norwich captained by Grant Hanley.

A rather dreary and overcast autumn day in west London, with the floodlights already on.

James Robson at Stamford Bridge

12:19 , George Flood

It is worth noting that Havertz is operating as a false nine today for the first time since his match-winning turn in the Champions League final win over Manchester City in Porto in May.

Chelsea fans would gratefully accept another performance of that caliber at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

In-form Mendy

Daunting stuff for Norwich.

It is worth noting that only three clubs have ever been in such a bad predicament after nine Premier League games and managed to survive.

Norwich unchanged

11:50 , George Flood

Norwich are unchanged from their goalless draw with Brighton last week.

The ineligible Billy Gilmour’s place on the bench is taken by Danish midfielder Jacob Sorensen.

Five Chelsea changes from Malmo win

11:44 , George Flood

So Chelsea make five changes in total to the team that thrashed Malmo in midweek.

Kai Havertz does indeed spearhead the attack without Lukaku and Werner, supported by Callum Hudson-Odoi and Mason Mount.

Reece James is fit enough to return in defence along Trevoh Chalobah, with Andreas Christensen and captain Cesar Azpilicueta dropping to the bench.

In midfield, Mateo Kovacic replaces N’Golo Kante, who is not in the matchday squad at all.

Tuchel explains Haaland comments: I fell into a trap

11:24 , George Flood

By the way, any Chelsea fans left potentially giddy at the chance of a move for Erling Haaland following Thomas Tuchel’s interview with Sport Bild earlier this week might want to take note of the manager’s latest comments on the situation.

“I fell into a trap,” said Tuchel. “I got an award in Germany. I got an award from a newspaper. They gave me this award and asked me about a player.

“Normally I never, never speak about other players, because I simply never do.

“And we were making more or less fun about it and I should have known better because in making fun about it and being a nice guy to answer a question, instead of ‘no I don’t want to answer a question,’ getting this award I joke about a double striker with Romelu in October and it gets like we put an offer in. That was the context, but I should have known better.”

He still doesn’t appear to have ruled out a swoop in future, however...

Chelsea paid tribute to former vice-chairman Matthew Harding - after whom the north stand at Stamford Bridge is named - against Malmo in midweek and will do so again today.

There will be a minute’s applause ahead of kick-off in memory of Harding, who died in a helicopter crash 25 years ago. Yesterday was the anniversary of the tragedy.

Chelsea are also paying tribute to Sam Hasan, a long-serving member of their finance team who sadly passed away two weeks ago.

Chelsea loanee Gilmour happy at Norwich, Farke insists

10:56 , George Flood

Having said that Gilmour was ineligible to face his parent club Chelsea today, there are doubts as to how much he would have been involved anyway.

The 20-year-old was an unusued substitute against Brighton and has not played a minute in the Premier League for Norwich for more than a month.

There have been whispers over a potential recall by Chelsea in January, though Farke insists Gilmour is happy to be at Carrow Road.

"There is always a lot of talking when an exciting player like Billy is sometimes not in the starting line-up or does not get minutes like in the last game," said Farke.

"But Billy is absolutely happy to be here and we are absolutely happy that we have him. Discussions with Chelsea are pretty trustful, everything is okay.

"Billy is fully committed, with a great personality - of course he is not dancing on the table when he is not playing, but he is a great character and I cannot praise him enough."

Tuchel vs Farke: Close friends go head to head

10:49 , George Flood

Compatriots Farke and Tuchel are certainly no strangers, having worked together previously at Borussia Dortmund.

Farke is looking forward to seeing his old friend again today as he bids to damage Chelsea’s title bid.

"Thomas is one of the greatest coaches on this planet and his CV speaks for itself, he has worked at the giants of Europe and won national titles, now the Champions League," Farke said.

"We worked together for two years at Dortmund and had a really good relationship.

"But now it is such a busy schedule so there is not always that chance to meet for a coffee, sometimes you can maybe have a little text message.

"It is fantastic to see him again tomorrow, but then also worrying because you know you will face a really strong opponent who have been really well prepared."

Farke: Tough test for Norwich... but we aren’t scared

10:41 , George Flood

Norwich have not beaten Chelsea since 1994, a run of 17 matches.

Per Opta, another loss today would set a new Premier League record for the club in terms of a sustained losing streak against one particular team.

And Farke is under no illusions as to the scale of the task facing his team - who are yet to even lead in a game so far this season - at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

"We know that we face the toughest task in world football - a world-class coach, world-class players and a world-class club," he said.

"They are the reigning Champions League winners and they are top of the league, in the best league in the world.

"It couldn't be harder, but we are looking forward to this game.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

"We want to play this game and are not fearful - we have worked so hard to be able to play on this level for these games.

"If we don't trust ourselves to play these games, then after each promotion we should say 'no, thanks a lot, but we don't take part in the Premier League' and rather stay in the Championship or perhaps League One where we will win many games.

"If we go there with a top performance, then in football there is always a chance to have one of those days."

Tuchel defends Lukaku decision

10:33 , George Flood

Speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, Tuchel hit back at criticism over his costly decision to not hand Lukaku a rest against Malmo.

“He was and is mentally a bit overplayed, like others in our squad, but that doesn’t mean that we constantly have to rest them,” said the German.

“Romelu didn’t need this break, so it was not a muscle injury or something. It was an accident.

“I don’t follow this argument. It is not like the body collapsed.”

Chelsea vs Norwich prediction

10:25 , George Flood

It’s top versus bottom in the Premier League and as such it’s not exactly a stretch to imagine a one-sided contest. Chelsea are without their leading striker which could, in theory, impact their goal threat.

But there is so much class elsewhere, and their deputies are themselves quality players eager to impress. Anything other than a stroll for the European champions would come as a surprise.

Chelsea 3-0 Norwich

Norwich team news: Gilmour ineligible to face parent club

10:24 , George Flood

Norwich boss Daniel Farke will not be able to call upon the services of Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour this afternoon, with the Scottish playmaker ineligible to face his parent club.

Todd Cantwell, Sam Byram and Christoph Zimmermann are all still out for the Canaries, while Polish international winger Przemyslaw Placheta is short of match fitness.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

Chelsea team news: No Lukaku, Werner or Pulisic

10:19 , George Flood

Chelsea are without strikers Romelu Lukaku (ankle) and Timo Werner (hamstring) today after both sustained injuries in the Champions League drubbing of Malmo in midweek, with Thomas Tuchel facing questions over why he started his club-record signing in a game the Blues were expected to win comfortably anyway after revealing just days before that he was “mentally tired” after being overplayed.

Kai Havertz came off the bench to score the fourth against Malmo and will be expected to lead the line today, with Christian Pulisic still not yet ready to return following an ankle injury.

Hakim Ziyech is likely to come back in after illness, with Mason Mount on the other side of a front three with Havertz.

Chelsea predicted XI: Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Rudiger; James, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell; Mount, Havertz, Ziyech
