Today’s FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Manchester City will be the first time Thomas Tuchel and Pep Guardiola lock horns in English football — and it could be a thriller.

Both managers are obsessed with possession, so something will have to give.

While Chelsea have dominated the ball in the majority of the games since the German replaced Chelsea legend Frank Lampard at the end of Janaury, he has proved he can win, even when they have not.

Liverpool enjoyed 54 per cent of possession in Chelsea's 1-0 win at Anfield last month, yet Tuchel's side dominated the chances, with five shots on target compared to the Merseysiders' one. If they are forced to play more on the counter against City, it might just suit them.

Mount vs Foden

Phil Foden's social media operators stoked up the rivalry between him and Kyllian Mbappe ahead of City's Champions League semi-final with PSG, but comparisons with Mason Mount may be more relevant.

Two young English attacking midfielders with ambitions of starting for England at the Euros. While Foden may have the more eye-catching skills, Mount is leading that race right now.

Dropped for Tuchel's first game in charge, the Chelsea boss quickly learned the error of his ways and Mount is now a guaranteed starter in Chelsea's attack.

Battle of the false nines

Kai Havertz has led the line for Chelsea in recent weeks and was particularly impressive in the 4-1 win against Crystal Palace.

But Tuchel will hope he can have more of an impact than he did in two attempts against Porto in the Champions League quarter-final if he is picked in the centre again.

City, meanwhile, have coped with an injury-wrecked season for Sergio Aguero by largely dispensing with the need to play a No9. Ilkay Gundogan has been superb scoring from deep positions — and tracking his runs and those of Bernardo Silva will be key for Chelsea.
