Chelsea FC 1-1 Leicester LIVE! Alonso goal - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Chelsea vs Leicester - LIVE!

Marcos Alonso’s fine volley handed Chelsea a 1-1 draw with Leicester and secured a third-place Premier League finish in everything but mathematics.

Alonso had switched off to help James Maddison to rifle the Foxes into an early lead at Stamford Bridge, but delivered a sweetly-struck effort to level before the break.

The Blues boast a three-point advantage on fourth-placed Tottenham going into the campaign’s final day, but a goal difference superiority of 18.

Christian Pulisic inexplicably missed a tap-in that would have sealed third place for the Blues with a game to spare.

The USA forward scuffed wide when it was far easier to score, and so Chelsea were left to finish the job in Sunday’s final match of the season against Watford at Stamford Bridge.

Todd Boehly was at Stamford Bridge again, but of the matches it is known the incoming new owner has attended, the US magnate has yet to see Chelsea win in person.

Boss Thomas Tuchel and his players would have been frustrated not to convert at least one of several big second-half chances and seal victory.

The tie was played out in front of a curiously subdued Stamford Bridge, with the home supporters perhaps fatigued by the continued takeover saga.

But the Chelsea fans unveiled a banner in tribute to manager Tuchel before kick-off, and the beaming German coach appeared delighted with the support.

Chelsea moved the ball around neatly from the off, but failed to open Leicester up.

Maddison made the Blues pay with a rifled finish from 18 yards, punishing Alonso’s failure to track back.

Kasper Schmeichel’s raking ball should not have dropped to Timothy Castagne, but Alonso had switched off and missed the danger.

The full-back’s inside pass flicked off Toni Rudiger’s heel, and Maddison latched onto the loose ball before lashing past Edouard Mendy.

Romelu Lukaku fluffed a fine chance when played in by N’Golo Kante, with the Belgium hitman delaying his shot too long.

Chelsea finally levelled though, when James’ masterful diagonal cross was matched by Alonso’s crisp volley.

After the sides had turned around on level terms, Chelsea set to work on taking control.

While the Blues seized the initiative however, they kept failing to turn their dominance into a lead.

Lukaku nodded wide from Hakim Ziyech’s smart cross, and then Christian Pulisic side-footed wide with the goal at his mercy.

James and Lukaku combined to deliver a tap-in on a plate for the USA forward, but he could only scuff wide.

Chris Sutton: Thomas Tuchel could LEAVE Chelsea this summer

19:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit and former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton believes Thomas Tuchel could LEAVE Stamford Bridge this summer.

“Whichever way we want to look at Lukaku it hasn’t been a good season for him and there were great expectations.

“Chelsea’s players haven’t fired this season and Manchester City and Liverpool have left them for dead, it’s as simple as that.

“Now with this uncertainty it looks like it could all fall apart and I’m really not so sure Thomas Tuchel will be there next season.

“Everything is up in the air, uncertainty over the takeover, players wanting out, Lukaku is unhappy and it will be interesting to see if he goes too. It’s falling apart, isn’t it?”

Antonio Rudiger’s hospital ball

19:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

Antonio Rudiger made a surprise farewell visit to Chelsea and Westminter Hospital this week.

The German will join Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The Germany defender has been a staunch supporter of the NHS and his local hospital during his time at Chelsea, and made another visit this week before he departs west London this summer.

Rudiger spent an afternoon at the hospital, delivering presents, signing autographs and meeting patients on the site’s wards.

"I’ve fully enjoyed visiting Chelsea and Westminster Hospital now and over the years," said Rudiger.

"It’s always been important to me to come out into the community and show my support, and once again it’s been a real pleasure to meet both patients and staff who are such an inspiration.

"The hospital and staff are incredible and work tirelessly to deliver the best possible care - thank you for everything you do - I will miss you all!"

The visit was organised by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Foundation and its official charity CW+.

Rudiger visited paediatric wards and also met staff from the Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in just his latest visit to the hospital that he has attended regularly during his time with the Blues.

"We would like to say a big thank you to Toni for his time today and for his support and generosity over the years," said Chelsea and Westminster Hospital director Dominic Conlin.

"There has been a real buzz around the hospital and it means so much to the staff to know that Toni has supported them.

"The visit has especially brightened up the day of our younger patients and their families.

"It’s such a boost for them to meet one of their heroes and be inspired, and it makes a real difference to their care and experience."

N’Golo Kante reflects on his time at Leicester

Leicester, of course, were the club where N’Golo Kante made his name and the midfielder has looked back on his time at the King Power Stadium.

“Of course when we play against Leicester it is always special,’ he said. ‘Leicester were my first club in England, gave me my first title in England. We achieved some great things and it’s very special to play against them as a club. But many of the players have changed and of course now I’m a Chelsea player.”

Why will Andreas Christensen likely never play for Chelsea again?

19:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

Thomas Tuchel has opened up on Andreas Christensen’s late decision to pull out of the FA Cup final.

The Denmark defender informed Chelsea’s manager that he was not available for Saturday’s clash with Liverpool at Wembleyon the morning of the game, despite not suffering from any injuries.

Tuchel revealed it is not the first time Christensen had declared himself not ready to play – and could not confirm if the player had made his final appearance for club, with just two games remaining of the season.

Christensen will join Barcelona as a free agent in the summer – and is a doubt for Thursday’s game against Leicester and Sunday’s season finale against Watford.

Tuchel said: “I’m not sure yet if he is involved tomorrow and on the weekend.

“Andreas came in the morning of the match to inform me, speak to me. He told me he was not ready to play the match, to start the match and be on the bench. He had his reasons. They will stay private and confidential.

“It was not the first time as you can see over the last weeks that we had some of the same situations. That’s why he did not play regularly over the last weeks.

Tuchel tells his players: Finishing in the top three is important

18:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

Thomas Tuchel has spent this week impressing on his players the importance of a top-three finish.

It may sound like scant consolation after the heartbreak of Saturday’s FA Cup Final shoot-out defeat to Liverpool. But the German is determined to find tangible evidence of progress in his first full season in charge.

Among the pre-season targets laid out by Roman Abramovich was closing the gap at the top of the table. And while Tuchel will not be answerable to the Russian this summer, his conversations with new owner, Todd Boehly, will be more comfortable if he can show clear signs of improvement.

Not that there is any suggestion the American plans to replace his manager. On the contrary, he has spoken privately of what an “amazing” talent he considers Tuchel to be.

Conor Gallagher AND Armando Broja will get a chance at Chelsea

18:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Thomas Tuchel says Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher will both have chances to prove themselves in pre-season.

The Chelsea duo have impressed on loan at Southampton and Crystal Palace respectively this season, doing so at the best possible time for their Stamford Bridge careers.

With the takeover saga dragging on and the club behind on their recruitment process heading into the first summer transfer window of the post-Roman Abramovich era, turning to internal solutions might be something Tuchel is forced to do.

Broja has scored six goals for Southampton in what has been a promising breakthrough campaign and, given Romelu Lukaku’s struggles since his return to the club, could feasibly play a role through the middle of Tuchel’s attack next season.

Gallagher, meanwhile, has broken into the England set-up after an array of energetic performances for Palace this season and could help further pad out the options in midfield, particularly as Mateo Kovacic has consistently struggled with injury.

Brendan Rodgers: Chelsea are the best side my Leicester team have played this season

18:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has backed Chelsea to be one of the Champions League’s leading forces next season.

While Thomas Tuchel’s side were touted as potential rivals to Manchester City and Liverpool before the start of the season, the German has seen his Premier League title challenge collapse.

Injuries to key players such as Ben Chilwell and Reece James came at the worst possible time and, more recently, the Chelsea boss has admitted all of the uncertainty hanging over the club amid their takeover saga was causing a distraction.

Still, reaching both domestic finals and finishing third behind two of the greatest teams English football can hardly been seen a disappointment, albeit with the caveat that Chelsea were looking like genuine challengers up until the frantic festive schedule.

Champions League winners in 2021, their defence came to an end at the quarter-final stage, although even that defeat came down to fine margins with Real Madrid - as they so often do - producing a stirring comeback inside the Santiago Bernabeu.

Rodgers, who worked at Stamford Bridge as a coach earlier in his career, hailed Chelsea as the “best team” his Leicester side had played this season and backed them to challenge in Europe next season.

Thomas Tuchel’s future lies at Chelsea

18:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

Thomas Tuchel has told Todd Boehly he wants to break the dominance of Manchester City and Liverpool - and the Chelsea manager has made it clear he needs the American to back his Stamford Bridge rebuild.

Tuchel is planning an overhaul this summer, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen walking away as free agents, while Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso could also go. The German admits that has forced him to rethink his transfer plans.

Loanees Armando Broja and Levi Colwill will be given the chance to force their way into his thoughts, while Conor Gallagher will be immediately thrust into the first-team squad after his outstanding season at Crystal Palace.

But Tuchel knows he needs to sign top-class talent, with Sevilla’s Jules Kounde in line to be the first signing once Boehly’s takeover is complete.
