The Chase's Mark Labbett has apologised to viewers for walking out of the studio during filming.

Mark, otherwise known as The Beast, addressed his "behaviour" on Twitter, after Wednesday's (January 26) episode saw him retreat behind the scenes following a Final Chase defeat.

After failing to trounce the contestants in the show's last round, Mark congratulated his opponents before saying, "I'm off." After getting up from his chair, he appeared to thump the set as his made his exit.

Presenter Bradley Walsh quickly apologised to "any kids watching", saying: "That is not how you should take defeat."

In his own apology to fans, Mark explained that his "mental health was shot" during filming, and so he felt he needed to walk away.

"Apologies to those of you disappointed with my behaviour tonight," the quizmaster wrote. "My mental health was shot before that game, it was storm off or break down in tears."

Offering his respect to the team who beat him, Mark added: "A remorseless diet of quality opponents didn't help."

Fellow Chaser Paul Sinha shared his support, telling Mark that he was simply "being human".

"You should never have to apologise for the crime of 'being human'", he replied. "I'd have been nowhere on those questions."

In other, happier Chase-related news, the gameshow's spin-off Beat the Chasers recently delivered an impressive victory for celebrity contestant Simon Weston CBE.

Earlier this month, Simon – who took on the Chasers to raise money for his chosen charity Debra – managed to take home £40,000 with 12 seconds to spare.

Commending his performance, Jenny 'The Vixen' Ryan said: "You know, what really made the difference for Simon was when he didn't know the answer to something or got it wrong, it didn't distract him.

"That is true quizzing."

The Chase airs on ITV.
