Charlotte businesses respond amid Uvalde, Texas school shooting. Here’s how you can help

The mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas inspired a national outreach of support for the families of the victims killed on Tuesday.

GoFundMe campaigns and other efforts have been created to raise money and provide other resources to those impacted by the violence that took place on Tuesday.

A few Charlotte businesses are also holding fundraisers to collect proceeds that will be donated to gun violence prevention advocacy groups. Here’s what to know and the local efforts and how to get involved.

Glory Days Apparel

The Charlotte-based clothing company is selling “Protect Our Children” shirts through June 3. All the proceeds will be donated to Moms Demand Action, a group that advocates for public safety measures with the aim of curbing gun violence.

Girl Tribe Co.

Girl Tribe Co., also based in Charlotte, is selling “Protect Our Kids” shirts. Proceeds will go to Everytown, a movement of more than 8 million volunteers working to end gun violence.

GoFundMe sets up hub to gather donations

VictimsFirst, a network of families of victims of previous mass shootings, set up a GoFundMe to support the families of the Uvalde shooting victims. So far, more than $2.6 million has been raised.

To protect against scams and fraudulent activity, GoFundMe has provided a list of verified fundraisers so donors can avoid fraudulent schemes to capitalize on the tragedy.

The crowdfunding platform set up a central hub for people looking to donate to help people directly affected. It can be found at gofundme.com/texas-elementary.

“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by (Tuesday’s) school shooting. At GoFundMe, we are working around the clock to ensure the families receive the support they need,” GoFundMe said in a statement.

How to avoid crowdfunding scams

GoFundMe says the following signs usually indicate that a fundraiser is legitimate:

  • An organizer related to the recipient of the donations

  • Details about how the funds will be used in the description

  • Family and friends of the recipient making donations

  • A clear path for the funds to reach the recipient

GoFundMe said all funds raised through its site are held by the company until they can verify who the recipients are and how the funds will be used.
