The iconic blue roof on Century II will be getting some TLC starting next month.

The performing arts and convention center will undergo construction to replace the roof, a city news release said.

The 1969 structure is owned by the city and managed by ASM Global, a venue and event management company based in Los Angeles.

The roof project is expected to begin in September and be completed next spring.

The first phase is expected to last a month and will include “replacement of the top ring not visible from the ground,” the city said.

Phase two, starting in October, will see “the replacement of the visible roof with the insulation and custom blue membrane that attempts to maintain the same signature blue color it had since Century II was completed,” the release said.

Several color samples were evaluated.

“It was important to the city that that building retain its original roof color,” said John Hale, general manager of Century II.

The roof rehabilitation will cost the city roughly $5 million of the nearly $10 million it plans to spend on renovations for the building in 2023, according to a 2022 Wichita City Council agenda.

It is one of 97 improvement projects for Century II over the next 10 years that adds up to roughly $18 million, a city report showed.

The construction should not interfere with events, the city said.

In 2019, the Riverfront Legacy Master Plan recommended the building be torn down as part of a redesign of the east bank of the Arkansas River downtown, The Eagle previously reported.

The project aimed to the replace the 53-year-old facility with mixed-used buildings and green space that would connect new performing arts and convention centers with the river.

Local activists started a petition drive in an attempt to save Century II and the former central library next to it.

Earlier this year, the city rolled out a plan that would spare Century II and the library. Under the plan, Century II would be repurposed, The Eagle previously reported.

“I’m not going to lie, Century II commands a lot of attention,” an architect involved with the project previously said. “The blue roof is iconic. It’s part of all of your imagery when you just Google Wichita on the internet.”
