Cecilie Bahnsen RTW Fall 2021

Happy to be back in the studio, Cecilie Bahnsen has been spending time indulging in the creative process and looking back at her brand’s highlight reels: past seasons, runway shows held in her home of Copenhagen, trips, or favorite fabrics.

It’s why her fall 2021 collection offers a remix of some of her signature shapes — Bahnsen has always made the case for timeless fashion over seasonal trends after all. Her charming billow-sleeved dresses naturally took center stage and were reworked with new wrap silhouettes, striking fil coupé fabrics and splashes of optimistic yellow and orange hues.

To make her point about the value of slower, trend-free fashion even clearer, Bahnsen has also decided to switch up her business model as of fall 2021: She plans to design two collections a year that will then be divided into several drops; offer her customers a chance to preorder the collection and introduce a capsule of season-less staples, in line with her customers’ attitude that “you buy a dress for your whole life.”

The Look: Romantic, feminine and quintessentially Scandinavian, as pretty bow-embellished, voluminous dresses were layered over fuzzy knits and paired with androgynous winter boots.

Quote of Note: “Dresses are so key for us and a natural start of the design process for me. But as we grow, it’s interesting to explore new categories instead of overdoing the dresses,” said Bahnsen, who put particular focus on her outerwear offer and designing the perfect coat that would fit her popular dresses’ billowy sleeves.

Standout Pieces: A bright yellow dress featuring a full skirt and a standout quilted fabric, and a voluminous coat done in textured wool, which added a tougher edge to the romantic mood of the collection.

Takeaway: With this new range and her new business model, Bahnsen is setting to grow the “sisterhood of women” associated with her brand, on her own terms — and there’s plenty of potential in the label’s new categories, its growing e-commerce and new classics capsule. The fireworks at the end of her digital presentation signaled her optimism and growing confidence.
