Cayce seeking artists to create a new riverwalk bridge mural

The city of Cayce is looking for ideas for a new mural the city wants to put on the Blossom Street bridge.

The Cayce Beautification Foundation is seeking submissions for a mural that will be painted on the supports of the bridge on the Cayce side of the Congaree River, near the city’s riverwalk area.

The mural should incorporate “different aspects of the city,” according to the artists’ call on Cayce’s website.

“This includes but is not limited to the Guignard family Brick Works, the Cayce Beautification Foundation branding, potential sponsor recognition and anything that complements our existing Riverwalk and Arts District,” the proposal says.

The size of the mural has not been determined, but the budget for the project is expected to be $10,000.

Submissions should be sent to Mendy Corder at mcorder@caycesc.gov by noon Aug. 26. The winning artist will be notified by Sept. 12.

Money for the mural will be raised with a farm-to-table dinner at the historic Guignard Brick Kilns in October.

Cayce has worked to turn the southern end of State Street into a “River Arts District,” encouraging local artists while revitalizing its downtown and connecting the area to foot traffic on the popular riverside trail. Columbia-based artist Ija Charles painted a mural on Railroad Street last year, shortly before completing a mural on Columbia’s Main Street. A year earlier, local artist Michael Geddings finished his own creation about a block away.
