Casualty spoilers follow.

Casualty fans have been left fearing another exit following the latest twist in tonight's episode (March 25).

Jacob Masters made the shock decision to quit the ED, unable to move forward in the aftermath of Robyn's death.

Jacob has found himself blamed by Robyn's grief-stricken colleagues, who can't help but think he played a role in her untimely demise.

That's because Jacob encouraged Robyn to stay on and work an extra shift, when she was already exhausted after a long day.

He also had an explosive row with Robyn prior to her car accident, something which his former colleague Marty was quick to remind him of.

Tonight's scenes explored the aftermath of this as Jacob struggled to navigate the day of Robyn's (off-screen) funeral.

Despite being suited and booted and ready to pay his respects, Jacob became unsure over whether he should be attending the service at all.

As Jacob addressed his team at the start of the shift, he couldn't help but become paranoid about the wider gossip going on around him.

After hearing Paige question whether Paul would actually want him there, Jacob decided to stay back in the ED and work instead. Faith also agreed this would be a good idea.

Jacob then threw himself into work in a bid to bury his feelings.

His guilt festered as he treated grieving father Clark, who claimed to have a message for Jacob from beyond the grave.

Clark claimed that someone from the other side wanted to speak to Jacob, but this understandably unsettled the nurse and he decided to take some time out.

Spotting his struggles, Iain reached out to Jacob and encouraged him not to isolate himself.

During a heart to heart, Jacob told Ian that, like everyone else, he blames himself for what happened to Robyn and believes it's his fault that she got behind the wheel in such an emotional state.

Iain acknowledged Jacob's feelings but was quick to remind him that he isn't to blame for the state of the NHS, and that he was being asked to perform the impossible.

He also encouraged Jacob to face his emotions and say goodbye to Robyn, even if it's in private.

Jacob did this by dialling into a live stream of the service, where Charlie was delivering a heartfelt eulogy.

At the end of a difficult shift, Jacob, once again, began to reflect on everything that had happened and his future in the ED.

Despite acknowledging that Robyn's death was the fault of the system, and not down to him, Jacob realised he wouldn't be able to carry on working there, given the animosity with the rest of the team.

With that in mind, Jacob wrote out his resignation letter and walked out of the ED – but has he gone for good?

Casualty bosses are keeping tight-lipped on whether this is the last we will see of Jacob, following a string of other exits recently.

As we know, Robyn, David and Marty all departed in last week's game-changing episode. George Rainsford also bowed out of the show earlier in the year, after nine years of playing Ethan.

While Jacob's fate remains to be seen, Digital Spy understands that this won't necessarily be the end of his story...

Casualty airs these scenes on Saturday, March 18 on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
