Casualty is set to air a devastating new storyline for an exhausted Donna Jackson, whose life is turned upside down when she accidentally causes a car crash.

After a hectic day at the Emergency Department, Donna is frustrated to learn that she has to come into work on her day off because a nurse has norovirus.

Before Donna departs for the ED again the next day, her daughter also makes her frustrations known as it seems her mother is at work more than she's at home.

Clearly exhausted and struggling with her work-life balance, Donna tries to maintain control when she arrives for her shift.

However, it's not long before chaos ensues when a man called Malik bursts into the ED with his wife Sufia, who has collapsed.

After some fraught communication with Malik, who doesn't speak any English, Rida eventually learns that Sufia may have had a stroke and is pregnant.

The team acts fast and manages to save the baby by performing an emergency C-section, but Safia tragically dies.

Donna and Rida are left to break the dreadful news to Malik, but the situation escalates when he lashes out at them. Stressed, Donna decides to check back in with her daughter at home, where there are also issues.

At the end of her relentless shift, an exhausted Donna falls asleep at the steering wheel on her way home and causes the car in front to crash.

Stunned and now wide awake, Donna gets out of her car and analyses the damage she has caused.

This is the start of a big and emotional storyline for Donna, as there will be repercussions from the car crash for weeks to come.

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
