Carrie Fisher's 'Star Wars' Advice to Daisy Ridley: Fight Against the Slave Outfit

Carrie Fisher has one piece of advice for Daisy Ridley: Rage, rage against the metal bikini. In a new article for Interview, Star Wars’ original leading lady spoke with her successor to the title, her Star Wars: The Force Awakens co-star Ridley, about the joys and challenges of living in Star Wars spotlight. In particular, she encouraged 23-year-old Ridley not to become a sci-fi sex object.

“Listen! I am not a sex symbol… You should fight for your outfit. Don’t be a slave like I was,” Fisher, 59, advised Ridley. “You keep fighting against that slave outfit.” In response, Ridley promised, “I will!”

Though Princess Leia’s slave bikini from Return of the Jedi made for an an iconic movie-fashion moment, Fisher clearly doesn’t relish the baggage that came with the revealing, uncomfortable costume. On a related note, Fisher cautioned Ridley that dating while Jedi can be difficult. “It’s hard to date once you’re a big Star Wars star because you don’t want to give people the ability to say, ‘I had sex with Princess Leia,’” said Fisher.

“Someone asked me if I found it easier to date now because I’m in the film,” Ridley confided. “I was like, ‘What the hell?’”

Nevertheless, the Princess Leia actress has come to appreciate her particular brand of stardom. “The fan thing is amazing! It’s quite a spectrum,” Fisher told the younger star. “I remember you saying that when you take pictures with people, you can feel their heart racing, and it humanizes them,” added Ridley.

Plus, there are the Halloween costumes. “I’ve seen some really cute kids dressed as Rey. I love that,” gushed Ridley.

“My favorite is when you see, like, a month-old kid dressed as you, so that it looks like the mother swallowed your outfit when she was pregnant, and the baby came out like that,” said Fisher. “Now I get to have someone to talk about it with—you!”
