Variety has named Carmelo Anthony, 10-time NBA All-Star and the executive producer and co-founder of Creative 7, as the keynote for its all-digital Sports and Entertainment virtual event presented by City National Bank on July 14.
The half-day event will feature conversations centered on the intersecting sports and entertainment industries, including discussions with athletes who are expanding their individual brands across film, TV and media, as well as NBC’s upcoming coverage of the Tokyo Olympics and the latest trends in overall sports programming.
Anthony will speak about his drive into entertainment production with his recently announced global content company Creative 7, championing underrepresented voices in the industry and projects that speak to the evolution of the human spirit through adversity, social activism and compelling, entertainment-forward storytelling.
Todd Burach, SVP and senior relationship manager, sports and entertainment division, City National Bank, will moderate the WNBA Super Panel, about how WNBA athletes navigate their careers as fan bases explode. Panelists include Elena Delle Donne, Washington Mystics; Chiney Ogwumike, Los Angeles Sparks; Sue Bird, Seattle Storm; Nneka Ogwumike, Los Angeles Sparks; and Liz Cambage, Las Vegas Aces.
“Variety is excited to once again present our Sports and Entertainment virtual conversations,” said Dea Lawrence, chief marketing officer at Variety. “We’ll examine how sports and entertainment leaders have forged closer connections with fans and audiences during a challenging period for live events.”
“This past year has accelerated the pace of a number of long-term trends across sports, none more than the explosive growth of women’s sports. And more than ever, athletes and sports businesses are focused on media and content, philanthropy, their brands and other facets of a career off the court,” added Burach. “City National has a long history of supporting athletes and the sports community, and we’re proud to continue that partnership through this evolution. We look forward to participating in Variety’s Sports and Entertainment Summit and discussing the important issues facing the industry today.”
