Cardi B criticizes congressman for speaking out against 'WAP' instead of police brutality

MADISON, Wis. — Cardi B is not mincing words with a Wisconsin congressman after he said one of her recent performances contributed to the "moral decline of America."

U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, a Republican from Glenbeulah, Wisconsin, said on the House floor Thursday that rapper Cardi B's appearance at the Grammy Awards earlier this year was "inconsistent with basic decency" in a speech urging the Federal Communications Commission to ban performances like hers.

"I've received some complaints in my office, and rightfully so, about Cardi B and the Grammys. They wonder why we are paying the FCC if they feel this should be in living rooms across the nation," Grothman said on the floor. "Wake up, FCC, and begin to do your job. The moral decline of America is partly due to your utter complacency."

Cardi B, who won a Grammy Award in 2019 for best rap album, told her 17.9 million Twitter followers that Grothman should worry about more pressing issues facing the country.

"This gets me so mad ya don’t even know!" she tweeted. "I think we all been on the edge this week since we seen police brutality back to back including watching one of the biggest case in history go down DUE to police brutality but wait ! This is wat state representative decide to talk about."

She also said Jacob Blake, who was paralyzed after being shot by a Kenosha, Wisconsin, police officer in August, won't get "proper Justice" because of lawmakers like Grothman.

"This is why people gotta vote, elect better people cause you got these dum asses representing states," she tweeted.

Reps for Cardi B and an aide to Grothman did not immediately respond to requests for interviews.

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion performed their hit song "WAP," which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100, and Cardi B's "Up" at the Grammy Awards in March.

"WAP," which is an acronym that includes a slang term for female genitalia, is a song about female sexual empowerment that uses explicit language.

The two rappers performed an edited version of the song at the Grammys. They engaged in some sexually suggestive dancing on a giant bed and did not sing the most explicit lyrics of the song.

Prominent conservatives like Fox News' Tucker Carlson have heavily criticized the song and the rappers' Grammys performance. Rolling Stone reported last week that the FCC received more than 1,000 complaints about the performance.
