Both Cameroon and Serbia are still alive in the World Cup after playing out a classic 3-3 draw in their Group G clash today (Monday), in the final 10am GMT kick off of the tournament.

Of the two nations, Serbia may feel the more disappointed, having led 3-1 thanks to Strahinja Pavlovic, Sergei Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksander Mitrovic goals. They looked in cruise control, after battled back from 1-0 down when Jean-Charles Castelletto opened the scoring for the Indomitable Lions.

They lived up to their nickname after going two goals down, though, with substitute Vincent Aboubakar inspiring a thrilling comeback, first lobbing the goalkeeper to reduce their arrears and then setting up Eric Choupo-Moting to level at 3-3. From there, it looked inevitable that one side would find a winning goal, but it ended level, leaving both teams still with a slim chance of making the last 16. Jean-Charles Castelletto’s first international goal – and Cameroon’s first since 2014 – had put the African side in charge, slightly against the run of play. But they looked like they might get another, before Serbia turned on the style in first half added time, skipper Strahinja Pavlović nodding home to level the scores, before Sergei Milinkovic-Savic’s strike – not completely cleanly hit – turned the game on its head.

Cameroon looked shellshocked by the end of the half, they were desperate for the whistle. Serbia would love to continue where they left off.

What on earth has happened to Cameroon? Mitrovic nearly got a third then before the whistle. Pavlovic and Milinkovic-Savic both punished some lacklustre defending from Song’s team and this game is now Serbia’s for the taking. Incredible stuff.

Various media outlets are now confirming that Andre Onana has been SENT HOME from Cameroon’s World Cup squad, after a disagreement with the coaching staff, including boss Rigobert Song. It’s even been claimed that Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o tried to talk Onana round after a disagrement over the style of goalkeeping he played with seemed to spark the row.

No Andre Onana in the Cameroon lineup today, which we understand is for discplinary reasons. The Inter Milan goalkeeper is one of the stars of this Indomitable Lions’ team, so that comes as a blow. Devis Epassy takes his place in goal.

As we prepare to get the teamsheets from Al Janoub Stadium, the suggestion is that Serbia could go with both of their big men up front together, having picked the Fulham man over the Juventus star against Brazil.

An interesting tidbit here: Serbia have lost both of their previous World Cup games against African nations, losing 3-2 to Ivory Coast in 2006 (2-3) and 1-0 Ghana in 2010. In fairness, both those African sides were very good, and for 45 minutes against Brazil last week, Serbia actually looked quite good.

The situation in Group G is delicate for both Cameroon and Serbia, having both lost their opening games. Whoever loses today would be in serious jeapordy of being eliminated – and that would become a certainty if Brazil and Switzerland draw in the 4pm (GMT) kick off later.

They’d both still have a shot at qualification for the last 16 if this morning’s game was a draw, but both would prefer a win either way in the Brazil game, to give them a decent chance of second place.

Neither of these sides played particularly badly in their respective openers, with Cameroon starting well against Switzerland and having decent chances through the likes of Choupo-Moting, Mbeumo and Martin Hongla.

However, they lacked end product and that proved their undoing in an eighth successive World Cup loss.

Serbia were on a bit of a hiding to nothing against Brazil, looking to deny their illustrious opponents space and counter, and did at least manage to keep the door shut until past the hour mark in Lusail.

However, they have far more flair and options in attack than to be that passive going forward again and will surely look to exert more control against Cameroon with additional firepower while keeping that defence solid.

I sense there are a couple of goals in this, but likely resulting in a hard-fought draw that keeps both sides alive but probably does little to advance their qualification hopes, boosting Switzerland’s hopes instead.

Serbia could be boosted by the return to full fitness of highly-rated left wing-back Filip Kostic, who missed the defeat by Brazil with a knock.

He could come into the starting XI here as head coach Dragan Stojkovic seeks greater attacking impetus in a must-win fixture.

The same could also be true of Kostic’s Juventus team-mate Dusan Vlahovic, who came off the bench last time out having also been short of fitness.

He could also be brought in to boost an attack led by Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic - who also entered the tournament on the back of an injury - and Ajax legend Dusan Tadic.

Cameroon are set to remain without Olivier Ntcham today, with the Swansea midfielder ruled out of the group stage due to a hamstring injury.

That is the only known absentee for Rigobert Song’s Indomitable Lions, who have some interesting choices to make up front once more.

Captain Vincent Aboubakar started on the bench against Switzerland and was only handed a late second-half cameo, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting leading the line instead flanked by Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Karl Toko Ekambi.
