Call the Midwife series 10 has added former Coronation Street star Paula Lane to the cast.

Set to return to screens next week, the BBC One drama is the first TV project she's taken on since being killed off in Weatherfield as Kylie Platt five years ago, although there's currently no hint as to who she's playing.

Joining the Soap From the Box podcast, Lane admitted that she suffered "separation anxiety" whilst working away from her family.

"There was a lot of separation anxiety going on when I went to film for Call the Midwife," she began.

"I remember feeling quite strange – I should be feeling excited about this, what's going on? And of course, there was this underlying anxiety there about leaving my family. But I've got to say I just love TV... I just love the intimacy of it."

Later on in the podcast, the 34-year-old also acknowledged the coronavirus restrictions put in place on set.

"l think the excitement that was buzzing around me when I first went on set – obviously under slightly different circumstances being behind masks and everything – I was just like, gosh."

"I remember being in the green room. I'd just watched the Christmas episode [of Call the Midwife] which was magical with my mum on Christmas Day. And I was sat with all these amazing actresses like Linda Bassett and Jenny Agutter, I couldn't believe it."

Lane played Kylie Platt on the ITV soap opera for six years until her character's death in 2016. She was introduced as Becky McDonald's (Katherine Kelly) half-sister but her full-on personality and feisty attitude got her through many major storylines.

Her death was considered one of "the most shocking in Corrie's history" and Kylie's gruesome stabbing even raising complaints with Ofcom.

Lane admitted that some people thought she was "mad" to leave her role on Corrie but after mulling it over she decided it was the right move for her as she "wanted to be other people and explore other characters".

Call the Midwife returns to BBC One on Sunday, April 18.
