California State Sen. Scott Wiener, a target on the right, receives bomb threat

California state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, speaks on a measure at the Capitol in Sacramento on March 31, 2022.

Police are investigating multiple death threats against State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, including a bomb threat that listed his home address.

The threats — coming from a person using the name Zamina Tataro — came at 6 a.m. via email to The San Francisco Standard, which promptly informed the San Francisco police, according to the Standard’s report.

The email listed Wiener’s home address and threatened to bomb it, and also to shoot up the senator’s Sacramento office.

According to The Standard, police searched Wiener’s home but did not find any explosive devices.

This is not the first time a person using the name Zamina Tataro has issued a bomb threat. Past threats under that name were sent to a high school in Ontario, Canada where a transgender teacher works, and to the Boston Children’s Hospital’s transgender health care unit, according to the Standard.

The threats come at a time of heightened attention for Wiener. His legislation — including a bill to turn California into a sanctuary for transgender children from states that have outlawed gender-affirming treatment — has made him a target for rightwing extremists. He was labeled a “communist groomer” by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and accused of releasing pedophiles from prison by conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Earlier this month, Wiener shared on Twitter a threat he received following Kirk’s accusatory tweets.

“The extreme homophobic and transphobic rhetoric that has escalated on social media and right wing media outlets has real world impacts. It leads to harassment, stalking, threats, and violence against our community. People are dying as a result. Responsible political leaders on the right must call it out and stop tolerating it,” Wiener said in a statement.
