Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper was on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Monday, where he discussed his new book in which he alleges former President Trump made all sorts of absurd requests. Esper also claimed he kept all the stories secret because he wanted to stay close to Trump to prevent him from doing something foolish. When Judd Apatow came on the show immediately following Esper, he wasn’t buying any of what Esper was selling. “I don't think George Carlin would like Mark Esper,” Apatow said when asked about the earlier guest’s interview. Apatow recently made a George Carlin documentary, and he believes the late comedian would have thought Esper was part of the corrupt system. “Carlin's whole idea was that people with money manipulate the whole system” Apatow said. “So if somebody knows that Trump is a maniac, you would think the day after he gets fired is the day to go, ‘Hey, he wanted to shoot all the George Floyd protestors in the legs.’ But he waits a year to write a book and make money. And I think that was George Carlin's whole thing, which is that they're not looking out for you.” While Colbert appeared more willing to give Esper the benefit of the doubt, Apatow seemed prepared to make things awkward with the other guest in the green room.
