Burnley were relegated from the Premier League after falling to defeat at home to Newcastle on the final day of the 2021/22 season - and Leeds scored late to beat Brentford.

It was the Clarets who held the advantage going into the final day but only goal-difference held their heads above water before the visit of Newcastle.

The Magpies not long ago feared that this trip could decide their own fate yet the ease in which they pulled into a first-half lead, via Callum Wilson from the penalty spot, exemplified their powerful burst to the finish line.

Shortly after the opener at Turf Moor, Leeds thought they had broken the deadlock in west London only for Joe Gelhardt’s finish into the roof of the net to be pulled back for an offside by VAR.

In the second period, the Whites gained their best chance to pull clear in the as-it-stands table when David Raya tripped Raphina in the box.

The Brazilian dusted himself down to place his spot-kick in the top corner and hands his side the advantage after 56 minutes.

Wilson tucked away Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross on the hour mark to leave Burnley staring relegation in the face - unless a huge final-day turnaround could save them.

Maxwel Cornet netted a reply for the Clarets to maintain their hopes before Brentford levelled up via a Sergi Canos header, sending a bouncing Turf Moor to within a goal of safety.

A touch of reprieve arrived for Leeds with a second booking for Canos earning him an early bath - and Jack Harrison was to be the Whites’ hero with an injury-time drive from outside the box beating Raya to send the away end into pandemonium.
