The bond referendum was the largest in Mecklenburg history and the second largest in North Carolina. It authorized borrowing money to build 10 new schools, replace the buildings of seven existing ones and cover additions and renovations at 12 schools.

As of Nov. 30, 2021, nine projects totaling $238 million have been completed; nine worth $381 million are under construction; and eight totaling $325 million are in the design phase, according to the district’s project dashboard.
