Yahoo Movies Britney Spears testifies that her conservatorship prevents her from having more children
Britney Spears has talked about the "abusive" conservatorship that she has been under for 13 years in an explosive, impassioned court appearance. The singer said she had been drugged, made to work against her will and been prevented from having a child through the controversial agreement.
She spoke for 23 minutes through a phone call that was broadcast in a LA court room yesterday, 23 June. Spears said she had been put on psychiatric drug lithium without her consent and stopped from having her IUD removed despite expressing a wish to have more children.
“I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised,” she said. “I just want my life back.”
The singer's father, Jamie Spears, was granted control over her affairs by court order in 2008 after she had a breakdown following years of paparazzi harassment. He controls her finances, while a licensed professional conservator took over Spears’ personal care on an ongoing temporary basis in 2019. Yesterday, she said that her life should not need to be controlled if she is healthy enough to work.
"The laws need to change,” she said. “I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. I don’t feel like I can live a full life. It’s embarrassing and demoralising what I’ve been through, and that’s the main reason I didn’t say it openly. I didn’t think anybody would believe me.”
The 39-year-old said that the drugs she had been forced to take had made her feel more unwell. "This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good," she said. "I'm not happy, I can't sleep. I'm so angry and I cry every day."
One of the most shocking allegations came when Spears explained that her reproductive rights had been challenged by the conservatorship. “This so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children,” she said.
“I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” the singer added. “I was told right now in the conservatorship I am not able to get married and have a baby.”
Jamie Spears' lawyer issued the following statement in response: "He is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain. Mr Spears loves his daughter, and he misses her very much."
