Linsar may not be a household name (it’s actually a well-established British TV maker, best known for smaller screen sizes), but if you’re looking for the biggest 4K bargain of the week, this feature packed LED flatscreen deserves your immediate attention.

50-inches is a great size for movies and sports fans, and if you’re after a low-cost upgrade for the lounge, or simply want a new TV for the bedroom or spare room, it ticks all the right boxes.

Why we love it

Cheaper than a cheap thing on sale at ‘Cheap R Us’, it still looks the part, with fashionably thin black bezel and widely spaced feet (make sure you have furniture wide enough to accommodate it, if you’re not wall mounting).

Copious catch-up TV comes via its Freeview Play tuner. Not only does Freeview Play offer all the main channels (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, My5, plus UK TV Play and CBS catch-up), there’s a handy roll-back 7-day programme guide to find what you’ve missed, and plenty of box sets available to stream for free too.

You might expect a paucity of HDMI connections for the price, but the UHD8050 generously has three on offer which should cover most TV box and Blu-ray or DVD disc player needs. There’s also a couple of USB ports.

If you’re upgrading from an old hi-def (or heaven forfend) standard def TV, you’ll immediately appreciate the resolution boost offered by this 4k screen (it boast four times the pixel count of a regular HD TV), and its HDR (High Dynamic range) delivery, which adds extra sparkle to pictures.

Of course, at this price there are caveats.

Linsar's UHD8050 TV doesn’t boast a full blown smart platform — so no Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+ apps on tap — but it does come with a web browser and YouTube. Those missing big name streaming services can be had via an optional streaming stick, perhaps a Fire TV model from Amazon or a Roku player. You may already have them available in another device, anyway.

It can even record TV shows to a connected USB drive, to watch later. Unlike a regular TV recorder, you can’t record one channel while watching another, but this is still a great way to timeshift programmes on at inopportune times or when you’re out and about.

Which, one day, you might be.
