Boris Johnson is facing a Tory rebellion from the 50-strong Northern Research Group of MPs over controversial plans to cut up to £1,000 a year from Universal Credit payments.

The group has warned against removing an emergency increase in payments which is designed to protect poorer families during the coronavirus pandemic while lockdown restrictions are still in place.

It came as Mr Johnson’s government denied claims ministers were planning to “lower” workers’ rights after Brexit, amid reports they were preparing to tear up key protections enshrined in EU law such as the 48-hour working week.
