Brentford vs Manchester United LIVE: Premier League result and final score as visitors suffer four-goal defeat

Manchester United suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford as Erik ten Hag’s second game in charge resulted in one of the club’s worst results in their Premier League history.

United have now lost both of their opening Premier League matches under Ten Hag but the club plunged to new depths as a brilliant Brentford side raced into a four-goal lead inside 34 minutes.

Brentford took the lead after only 10 minutes thanks to a mistake by David De Gea, with the United goalkeeper at fault again as Mathias Jensen doubled the lead.

Brentford were 3-0 up within half an hour when Ben Mee bundled the ball home at the far post from a corner and it was 4-0 five minutes later when Ivan Toney teed up Bryan Mbeumo to finish past De Gea.

Manchester United chase Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

16:50 , Jack Rathborn

Juventus have reportedly agreed to sell Adrien Rabiot to Manchester United for an initial £15million. The Guardian says the discussions over personal terms for the 27-year-old France midfielder are still at an early stage with approval still needed from his agent and mother. The paper notes he has achieved success with five Ligue 1 titles at Paris St Germain as well as another in Serie A, but he also has a uneven discipline record including fines for lateness.

The Red Devils are also said to be interested in Lazio’s Serbia midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who they have been linked with for a number of years. But the Telegraph reports intermediaries believe a deal can actually be done for the 27-year-old.

Ex-director Michael Knighton to launch ‘hostile bid’ to buy Manchester United from Glazers

16:30 , Jack Rathborn

Former Manchester United director Michael Knighton claims to be planning a “hostile takeover” of the club in a bid to finally end the Glazer family’s controversial reign.

Knighton came close to buying United in 1989 for £10m before a deal fell through, but spent several years on the Old Trafford board.

And amid continued fan unrest over the Glazers, who continue to leverage their ownership against significant debt and further soured supporter relations during the Super League scandal, Knighton believes it is time to end relieve the “inept” owners of the club.

“We are a club in crisis and we all know the reason why,” Knighton told Man Utd the Religion. “We have an inept and frankly useless ownership who know little about this game of football. Everyone knows that we need new ownership of this football club and that is my aim and those are my objectives.

Cody Gakpo responds to Manchester United transfer interest

16:25 , Jack Rathborn

Cody Gakpo has hinted that PSV securing Champions League football could see him opt against a move to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old Netherlands international is the latest name to be linked with Old Trafford as new manager Erik ten Hag seeks to strengthen his squad in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

United are yet to open talks with Gakpo or PSV but - as reported by The Independent on Tuesday - their interest in the winger is known.

Gakpo played as PSV’s progressed in the Champions League qualifying rounds with a 3-2 win over Monaco on Tuesday evening. They now face Rangers for a place in the group stages.

“We must first focus on and try to make it to the Champions League,” Gakpo told ESPN after the game when asked about his future.

Manchester United need to get over Sir Alex Ferguson exit, says Javier Hernandez

16:04 , Jack Rathborn

Javier Hernandez believes Manchester United need to adapt and finally get over Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit if they are to get back to the top.

The Scot called time on his masterful, medal-laden managerial reign at Old Trafford in 2013, having won 13 league titles and two Champions Leagues among his impressive trophy haul.

Speaking about his former football club - after a stint with United between 2010 and 2015 - Hernandez said the same kind of pressure shouldn’t be put on current and future managers.

“We need to get over it,” he said.

Erik ten Hag rejects ‘disaster’ claim over Man United’s summer business

15:57 , Jack Rathborn

No,” Ten Hag replied when asked if United’s summer business has been a “disaster”.

“Of course it would be my preference because we could be starting the process earlier [making these signings], that’s quite clear but the season is long and you have to get in the right players.”

“That is a difficult answer,” he replied. “When you have one hour then [I can]. It’s really complicated but we are really happy with what we have done until now. That was the positive point from last week and before. Tyrell Malacia did very well, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martínez both did very well in the game against Brighton. We are very happy with that.

“Of course there are developments in the transfer market [that may cause compromises] but still we have to get the players in who can contribute and not get players in who cannot do what we want to with the squad we have and then improve the team. We cooperate well [he and the executive] and it is to my satisfaction. [But] it was better to get the players earlier because now in the department of midfield and [attack] you have seen when we have one injury then we have a problem. That’s clear.”

What does Erik ten Hag want in a striker at Manchester United?

15:52 , Jack Rathborn

When Marnix Kolder was playing in a side managed by Erik ten Hag, his role was fairly uncomplicated. “I was the ‘escape’,” he told The Independent earlier this year. “When the ball was pressured at the back, the long ball from the keeper or the central defender came to me. I don’t know the word in English – a coat stand? The “kapstok”. It’s a typical word in Dutch. The big person they can play the balls to, then you play to the midfielders or to the side.”

Brentford boss Thomas Frank excited to face ‘brilliant’ Erik ten Hag

12:30 , Jack Rathborn

Thomas Frank has hailed Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hag as “brilliant” and admitted he is looking forward to a reunion with Christian Eriksen when the Red Devils travel to Brentford on Saturday.

United suffered a surprise defeat to Brighton on the opening weekend of the season, after putting in a below-par performance at Old Trafford.

The Bees go into the match off the back of a comeback 2-2 draw at Leicester where they fought back from two goals behind to secure the point.

However, Frank does not believe there is a good time to play United.

“I don’t think there is an ideal time,” the Bees manager said. “In general I don’t believe in if it’s a perfect situation to play them in or a bad situation to play them in.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag responds to Marcus Rashford exit talk

12:22 , Jack Rathborn

Erik ten Hag expects Marcus Rashford to remain at Manchester United amid speculation linking the forward with Paris Saint-Germain.

It is understood Rashford’s representatives have spoken to PSG about a switch to the Ligue 1 champions after a frustrating year at Old Trafford.

Rashford missed the start of last season with a shoulder injury before returning to score four goals in 25 Premier League appearances, losing his place in the England squad.

But Ten Hag insisted the 24-year-old, who has one year left on his contract with a club option for a further 12 months, remained integral at Old Trafford.
