Brentford vs Arsenal - LIVE!

Reiss Nelson’s early strike was enough for Arsenal to beat Brentford 1-0 and book their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The Gunners winger was handed a rare opportunity at the Gtech Community Stadium, while Emile Smith Rowe started a competitive match for Arsenal for the first time in 499 days and Charles Sagoe Jr made his debut.

Nelson did not need to wait long to make an impression, less than eight minutes on the clock when he opened the scoring. Eddie Nketiah pounced on a loose pass, cut it back for Nelson and the the winger cooly slotted into the bottom corner. Smith Rowe went close to doubling the lead as he drove into the box and had an effort saved, the 23-year-old making a real impression on his long-awaited return to the starting lineup.

Brentford offered very little in the first-half, but that changed after the break as they piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser. Yoane Wissa, who wasted the only good chance the Bees created in the opening 45 minutes, continued to be frustrated in the second period. He was denied on more than one occasion by a last-ditch block, before Aaron Ramsdale, getting his chance to impress in goal, produced a stunning save to turn Wissa’s effort onto the post as Arsenal held on.

Even Mikel Arteta made eight changes for this Carabao Cup clash, it was always going to be a night for players to state their case to start more.

A few caught the eye as the Gunners booked a spot in the fourth round with a 1-0 win over Brentford, one that they were made to work for.

Emile Smith Rowe, making his first start in 499 days and his 100th appearance for Arsenal, looked bright in midfield. Jakub Kiwior was solid at left-back. Aaron Ramsdale distributed the ball well and made a big save to deny Yoane Wissa.

In attack, it was Reiss Nelson who was the pick of the bunch, though, with the 23-year-old scoring the game’s only goal.

Arsenal ratings

Aaron Ramsdale 8

Back in the team after being on the bench for the previous three matches. Had a good game, with his distribution impressive. Made a huge save to deny Yoane Wissa in the second-half.

Kai Havertz 6

Another frustrating night for the German, who is yet to get going at Arsenal. Made some important defensive contributions, but looked off the pace in attack.

The Gunners are into the fourth round. Great performance from Ramsdale, who kept a clean sheet. Thought Nelson was bright going forward.

Impressive displays from Kiwior and Tomiyasu too. Some pleasing performances for Arteta to see.

Arsenal survive!

Far from comfortable in that second-half, Brentford miles better after the break.

The Gunners hold on though and they are through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

90+4 mins: Huge Brentford appeals for handball, nothing given. The hosts have a throw-in though, goalkeeper Flekken is up for it!

Flung into the box, flicked on... Wissa wins the header and Ramsdale comfortably claims, flopping to the floor in the process.

21:36 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: That’ll do nicely for Arsenal.

Havertz holds the ball up well, before playing it inside. Odegaard goes for goal from distance, spins behind for a corner. No rush to take this.

21:35 , Matt Verri

90+1 mins: Five minutes added on!

Still time for Brentford...

21:33 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Wissa has done everything but score tonight.

He looks to be in behind, but Tomiyasu scrambles back to get a foot in. Arsenal just about hanging on.

21:31 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Elneny urged to shoot from distance - he does so, just wide. Good effort to be fair.

Another Arsenal change. Nketiah off, Cedric on.

Tells you all you need to know about how Arteta is now viewing things.

21:28 , Matt Verri

84 mins: OFF THE LINE!

Arsenal are somehow still in front. Cross allowed to come all the way to Lewis-Potter at the back post, he drags a shot towards the far corner and Kiwior slides in to keep it out.

Ramsdale wasn’t getting there.

21:26 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Arsenal trying to just keep the ball and slow things down, but Brentford are doing a good job of keeping the pace frantic.

They’re a bit too keen there though, Nketiah fouled again.

And there will be two more Arsenal changes. Nelson and Smith Rowe off, Odegaard and Elneny coming on.

21:22 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Onyeka tries his luck from distance, Ramsdale parries it away.

Brentford then have the ball in the back of the net, but the flag is immediately up. Offside.

No VAR to check it either, so goal is ruled out. Rightfully so too.

21:19 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Arsenal starting to at least offer a threat in attack again.

Jesus slides a nice pass through to Nketiah, who shows good pace to get on the end of it. He gets the shot away on the stretch, straight at Flekken.

21:16 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Horrible pass from Zinchenko, picks out Wissa on the edge of the Arsenal box.

He lays it off to Janelt, decent opportunity but he slashes the effort miles over the bar. That was wild.

21:15 , Matt Verri

70 mins: That could prove to be a huge moment.

Havertz breaking down the left, his cut back picks out Nelson who fires wide with the first-time effort as he runs onto the ball.

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

21:13 , Matt Verri

Zinchenko is on for Arsenal. Feels like the kind of player you turn to when you want some control.

Jesus also introduced, White and Sagoe Jr the two to make way.

21:12 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Ball into the Arsenal box, Wissa should score. Again! Doesn’t get proper contact on the shot and Jorginho can boot the ball up the pitch.

Jensen shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Nketiah, chance for Arsenal to slow things down here.

Replay of that Wissa shot that hit the post - was in fact a brilliant save from Ramsdale.

21:10 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Wissa the latest Brentford player denied by a good block. Arsenal can’t get out, the pressure is relentless.

OFF THE POST! Wissa with another effort, crashes back off the woodwork. The Gunners are hanging on for dear life.

21:08 , Matt Verri

63 mins: It’s all Brentford at the moment. Hickey allowed to charge down the left, cuts inside and his shot is blocked.

Norgaard and Roerslev off for Brentford, Jensen and Ghoddos on.

21:06 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Crucial interception from Gabriel.

Long ball from Brentford, Tomiyasu doesn’t deal with it and Mbeumo pounces. Looks to slide a pass through to Wissa, he would have been clean through on goal, but Gabriel is there for Arsenal.

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

21:02 , Matt Verri

Brentford finally start to enjoy some momentum and Arsenal under the cosh for the first time.

They’ve just dropped the tempo a bit since the break. Errors creeping in.

21:02 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Arsenal doing their best to help Brentford back into this.

Gabriel taking too long on the ball in his own box, Wissa steals it from him. Ball dinked into the middle, Onyeka slices a volley wide.

21:00 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Oh, Roerslev is down again.

He beats Kiwior to the ball, knocks it down the line and takes the contact. About two inches in front of the linesman, who waves his flag for a free-kick.

Kiwior avoids a yellow card, home fans less than impressed.

20:59 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Roerslev has stayed down after a heavy challenge, Nketiah shown a yellow card.

Replays suggest it wasn’t that heavy, just a bit clumsy. Brentford man is back up on his feet and moving fine.

20:56 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Nketiah works space for himself just outside the area, unable to get the shot on target.

That might have been further out than all his Arsenal goals so far combined.

20:54 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Hickey strong to shove Sagoe Jr out of the way, the teenager sent tumbling to the floor.

Brentford break, Mbeumo plays a nice ball out wide for the overlap but Arsenal have enough men back to deal with it.

Wissa then looks to beat Ramsdale to the ball, but he’s well offside.

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

Aaron Ramsdale, who now no longer has the away fans behind him, being serenaded by Bees supporters: “You’re just a s*** David Raya.”

Elsewhere in the competition...

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

20:36 , Matt Verri

A decent half from Arsenal after they were gifted the opening goal.

Nelson the scorer, but he has also been excellent tracking back off the ball. Smith Rowe bright at times. Kiwior looked solid at left-back. Ramsdale’s distribution been good.

HT: Brentford 0-2 Arsenal

20:33 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time, Arsenal lead through that early Reiss Nelson goal.

It’s not exactly been a cup classic, but that won’t bother the Gunners as it stands. They’ve been in control for pretty much the entire half.

Lots for Thomas Frank to ponder at the break.

20:31 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on.

Bit of excitement, as Gabriel sees the ball out of play for a goal-kick and then punts it into the stands. Few fans had to take evasive action there.

Hand up in apology - think he meant to kick the ball into the hoardings.

Simon Collings from the Gtech Community Stadium

20:30 , Matt Verri

Bar one slip-up, it’s been a very solid half by Ramsdale.

His distribution has been very good and he has hasn’t shied away from playing out.

20:26 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Haven’t even made it to half-time and White has been booked for time-wasting!

It’s been coming, the Arsenal full-back has taken his time over a fair few throw-ins. Takes too long this time and it’s a yellow card.

So, so unnecessary.

20:25 , Matt Verri

39 mins: That’s really not what Ramsdale needs tonight.

Takes far too long on the ball, Wissa closing in and the Brentford forward very nearly robs him. Ball bobbles into space, Gabriel there to clear the danger.

20:23 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Nketiah looks to be stumbling off balance, but he plays a one-two with Jorginho and very nearly makes room for the shot.

Brilliant footwork, beats one defender but Pinnock gets across to clear.

20:20 , Matt Verri

35 mins: And out of nowhere it should be 1-1!

Norgaard whips a low ball into the middle, Wissa is completely free but fires a first-time effort wide of the post. Nobody near him, and Ramsdale wasn’t getting near the ball if it was on target.

20:19 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Second Arsenal goal doesn’t feel far away.

Smith Rowe again involved, this time playing the pass inside. Nelson finds Havertz, he has space for the shot but it’s tame in the end and Brentford scramble bodies across to block.

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

20:18 , Matt Verri

A few lovely, darting runs from Smith Rowe over the course of the first 30 minutes.

That has gone down very well with the away fans, who are singing his name now.

20:17 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Great save!

That’s what Smith Rowe brings to the side. Combines with Jorginho, glides into the box and beyond the challenges... Flekken sticks out a foot to stop his left-footed shot.

20:13 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Mbeumo fires the corner towards the near post, Wissa unable to flick it on into the middle.

Ball drops for Nelson, who is not in the mood for anything clever. Lumps the ball up the pitch.

20:13 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Really good from Gabriel - though not the outcome he wanted. Gets across out wide to deal with the ball down the line, he thinks it’s a goal-kick but corner given.

Rare chance for Brentford to get bodies in the Arsenal box.

20:09 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Great feet from Sagoe Jr to keep the ball and get Arsenal on the front foot.

Again Brentford are quick to get everyone back to within 15 yards of their own box. Jorginho fires a lovely pass through to Smith Rowe, brilliant first touch and his shot is blocked.

Bees can’t get out.

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

20:08 , Matt Verri

It’s all a bit pedestrian so far, with the game lacking any real bite.

Arteta will be happy with that for now, with Arsenal just taking the sting out of everything. Bees need a spark.

20:06 , Matt Verri

21 mins: More like it from Brentford, as the rain begins to fall.

Ball towards the back post, cleared only to the edge of the box as White makes a real mess of it. Janelt catches his strike nicely, Tomiyasu there with a big block.

20:04 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Brentford with everyone back well inside their own half, not exactly throwing caution to the wind after falling behind.

White looks to force the issue, long ball over the top as Smith Rowe makes the run in behind. Too much on it, Pinnock can see the ball out of play.

20:02 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Smith Rowe again swings it in, but the whistle has gone.

Janelt toppled to the floor in the box, referee decides he was fouled. Too many bodies in the way to see what actually happened, but Arsenal aren’t particularly complaining.

20:01 , Matt Verri

15 mins: All gone very flat now from the home fans, that early goal has killed the mood in the stadium. Just what Arteta would have wanted.

Sagoe Jr on the right, plays a low ball into the middle but nobody can get on the end of it for Arsenal. Not that it matters, Janelt then plays the ball straight out of play for a corner.

Brentford all over the place.

19:58 , Matt Verri

12 mins: It’s all Arsenal now, Hickey having to flick away a dangerous ball to the back post... concedes the corner.

Smith Rowe with the out-swinger, Tomiyasu can’t win the header at the back post.

Brentford break, Mbeumo finding Wissa. But then it’s a poor pass, Nelson flying back to get his body in the way and win a free-kick.

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

19:55 , Matt Verri

On Sunday, Nketiah had the exact same situation as that - pouncing on a poor back-pass. Back then, he lashed a shot which was saved.

This time, he cut it back and Arsenal scored.

GOAL! Brentford 0-1 Arsenal | Reiss Nelson 8'

19:54 , Matt Verri

Arsenal take the lead!

Out of nothing. Zanka with an awful pass and Nketiah can pounce, squaring it for Nelson. Collins unable to cut it out, Nelson has time to take a touch and finish low into the corner.

19:52 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Nketiah unable to hold the ball up, as the throw-in is sent down the line. Arsenal striker needs a better display tonight, he really struggled in the north London derby.

Speaking of struggling in the north London derby, Jorginho loses the ball on the edge of his own area. This time he’s not punished.

19:50 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Arsenal seeing lots of the ball early on, as you’d expect. Nice and patient with it.

Sagoe Jr will be relieved to have had some touches of the ball already, out on the right. Big night for him on debut.

19:48 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Ramsdale charges off his line to head the ball away as Wissa chases after a long pass over the top... offside flag up anyway.

Early signs would suggest Ramsdale wants to make an impression!

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

19:46 , Matt Verri

Ramsdale gets a huge cheer and his name sung by the away fans as he goes over to them before kick-off.

Still very much a fan favourite.

We’re underway in this third round Carabao Cup clash!

19:44 , Matt Verri

‘Hey Jude’ blaring out around the stadium, home fans have taken their seats and it’s a great atmosphere.

Plenty of changes from both teams but still two strong lineups. Time to get this one up and running.

Not long now!

19:41 , Matt Verri

Players will be in the tunnel very shortly, kick-off coming up in just a few minutes.

Tricky test on paper for the Gunners, Brentford haven’t exactly been their favourite opposition over the last couple of seasons...

Arsenal still unbeaten

19:35 , Matt Verri

The Gunners have certainly not been at their best so far this season, and the growing injury list has dampened the mood around the club further.

But they are still yet to taste defeat this season, domestically or in Europe, and in spells have shown the kind of form they are capable of.

With the likes of Smith Rowe, Nelson and Sagoe Jr keen to impress tonight, Arteta will be keen to see a sharp display from his side.

Simon Collings at the Gtech Community Stadium

19:27 , Matt Verri

Looks like Tomiyasu is playing centre-back tonight. He is finishing doing his warm-up with Gabriel, while Ben White has joined some attack work.

Judging by the warm-up, it also appears that it will be Nelson on left and Sagoe Jr on right. Havertz as left No8 and ESR as right No8.

Brentford made to work...

19:24 , Matt Verri

Fair to say Brentford were made to work to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

They took on Newport last month and after it finished 1-1 in normal time, the match went to a penalty shootout.

Brentford scored three, Newport didn’t score any... job done, just about.

Frank responds to Toney speculation

19:17 , Matt Verri

Thomas Frank admits Ivan Toney’s future at Brentford is out of control amid interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

The striker could be sold in January once he has completed an eight-month ban for betting breaches and is attracting interest from both the Gunners and the Blues.

The Bees are ready to demand as much as £80m for the 27-year-old, who recently signed up with super-agent Jonathan Barnett ahead of the January transfer window.

Toney returned to training last week but cannot play until January 16 after receiving his ban in May. He is believed to be open to joining a bigger club in an effort to force his way back into the England reckoning ahead of Euro 2024.

Frank said: “For me as a coach, I don’t want to sell him. Of course I want my best players. Of course I say to Phil [Giles] or Matt [Benham] ‘don’t sell him’.

“Ivan is a world class player, so why should we sell a world class player? I want him to play for Brentford for the rest of his contract but that’s not up to me to decide.”

I know it is more than 30 minutes until kick-off, but a very odd atmosphere here - basically because no one is here!

It all feels very ‘Carabao Cup’ right now.

Chance for Havertz to step up

19:07 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta has rotated his side against Brentford, but he has opted to start Kai Havertz.

The Germany international has endured a difficult start to life at Arsenal following his summer move from Chelsea.

Havertz has made eight appearances for the Gunners and is still yet to register a goal or assist. If anyone is in need of a confidence boost it is the 24-year-old and the chance to get off the mark against a rotated Brentford side is appealing.

It is going to take time for Havertz to adjust to his new team-mates and Arteta has called for patience.

Saka an injury concern for Arsenal

18:41 , Matt Verri

Mkel Arteta has revealed Bukayo Saka is a doubt for this weekend’s game against Bournemouth after being forced off in the closing stages of the north London derby.

Saka was replaced deep into stoppage time during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham, after forcing Cristian Romero into an own goal and scoring from the penalty spot, and the winger is almost certain not to be risked tonight.

“He was limping quite badly after the match,” Arteta said on Tuesday. “We had to get him off the field which is never a good sign and he wasn’t able to participate in the [training] sessions.”

Saka has made 86 consecutive Premier League appearances for Arsenal, a club record, but asked if he could miss the League game at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, Arteta added: “It’s a possibility, yes.”

Smith Rowe hoping for rare chance

18:34 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta is set to ring the changes for tonight’s Carabao Cup third-round tie at Brentford, with Emile Smith Rowe among the Arsenal fringe players in contention for a rare start.

Not so long ago, the idea of Smith Rowe being restricted to the early rounds of the cups and brief cameos from the bench would have appeared far-fetched but, remarkably, the midfielder is in line for his first competitive start since May 16, 2022 — a run stretching 499 days.

Last season, Smith Rowe managed just 195 minutes across 14 appearances, all as a substitute, and it has been a familiar story so far this term, during which he has amassed a little more than 25 minutes from the bench.

No VAR tonight

18:27 , Matt Verri

The EFL are keen to ensure every team involved is on an equal footing. With Football League teams involved and some playing home ties, it is deemed unfair to use VAR, which is only regularly used in the Premier League at this stage.

VAR will be in use for the two-legged semi-finals, as well as the final at Wembley, but not in the early rounds of the competition.

If an EFL side who do not have VAR set-up in their stadium make it to the final four, it will be installed there on a temporary basis.

Arsenal have arrived. Strong squad but looks like few youngsters here, such as Cozier-Duberry and Walters.

Mixed record for Arsenal

17:57 , Matt Verri

Arsenal have had a mixed record away to Brentford over the past couple of seasons.

They were beaten on the opening night of the campaign in Brentford’s first Premier League match, struggling to cope with the intensity of the occasion.

But then the Gunners were far more impressive last season, easing to victory as Fabio Vieira netted a brilliant strike from distance. Here’s some highlights from that match...

Battle on for Toney

17:49 , Matt Verri

Chelsea and Arsenal are considering a January move for Brentford’s England striker Ivan Toney.

Brentford are ready to sell Toney in the winter transfer window, when he has completed his eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.

Despite already spending more than £1billion under owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake, Chelsea are ready to enter the market again to solve their goalscoring problems.

Arsenal are also weighing up whether to bolster their forward line to boost their title bid. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta already has Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus, but could target a proven goalscorer to help his side push Manchester City.

Brentford will seek up to £80million for Toney, who will be in the final 18 months of his contract in January.

Standard Sport prediction

17:42 , Matt Verri

This should be a really intriguing derby, against a team able to exploit possible weaknesses in Arsenal’s midfield.

But, with both sides expected to make changes, the Gunners have the greater strength in depth and can come through a tough test.

Arsenal to win, 3-1 in normal time.

Arsenal team news

Arsenal have received positive word on Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leonardo Trossard following a few injury scares, but none are expected to feature at Brentford.

Second-choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will start, and likely be joined by Cedric Soares, Mohamed Elneny, Kai Havertz and Emile Smith Rowe.

Eddie Nketiah should keep his place as he tries to find some form in front of goal.

Predicted Arsenal XI: Ramsdale; Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Kiwior; Vieira, Jorginho, Havertz; Nelson, Nketiah, Smith Rowe
