Brazil vs Switzerland LIVE: World Cup 2022 result and final score as Casemiro thunders in late goal

Brazil overcame the absence of Neymar to beat Switzerland 1-0 and advance to the round of the 16 of the World Cup on Monday.

Casemiro scored in the 83rd minute with a shot from inside the area to put Brazil in the last 16 with a match to spare in Group G.

Brazil striker Neymar stayed at the team's hotel treating a right ankle injury sustained in the opener in Qatar. Team doctors have not yet given a timetable on his return — or said if he will return at all.

The win gave Brazil six points from two matches, leaving Switzerland with three. Serbia and Cameroon, which drew 3-3 earlier Monday, have point each.

Switzerland needs a win in the last match against Serbia to guarantee its spot in the next stage. A draw may be enough depending on the match between Brazil and Cameroon.

How are we feeling about Brazil, then? They are favourites, but have they looked it on the evidence of their opening two wins?

Gary Neville thinks they can reach the final. “They can. I though Spain vs Germany was the best game so far but Brazil are not playing that company yet. I expect them to rise to the occasion [when they do]. They are defending well and have showed they can change games from the bench. I think they are in a good place.”

What happens when a superstar forward, with the weight of a nation on his shoulders for the third World Cup running, sustains an injury in match No 1? After the period of mourning, there is discussion. 40 minutes of it.

Brazil’s pre-match press conference on Sunday – involving manager Tite, defender Marquinhos and Tite’s assistant Cesar Sampaio – was mostly devoted to the world’s most expensive player and the effect of his absence for the rest of the group-phase. “Football’s about context and sometimes we have to be strategic,” said Tite. “We have to think outside the box but we’re very confident we have the right replacement.”

So, who would it be? An abundance of terrific depth in attack, deeper than any other team in the tournament, should cover for the loss of the prodigal son. So, would it be one of Arsenal’s dynamic duo: Gabriel Jesus or Gabriel Martinelli? Maybe Manchester United’s £85m signing Antony? Or Real Madrid young gun Rodrygo? Or how about… Fred?

On this evidence, maybe not, as Kieran Jackson writes.

How Brazil tried to fill Neymar void with Fred - and failed

Player ratings, by Alex Pattle

Casemiro - 8

Was central as ever to Brazil’s possession and momentum. Supplied Vinicius Jr with a perfectly-weighted pass that would have gone down as an assist, had Richarlison not been offside in the build-up. Broke the deadlock on 82 minutes with a great, slashing finish.

Fred - 5

Marked Brazil’s only change, coming in for the injured Neymar, and was never going to do the same job as his nation’s talisman. Booked in the second half, before being taken off.

Richarlison - 4

Touch wasn’t as sharp as it was against Serbia. It felt as if the ball wasn’t quite falling for the forward, but that was down to him most of the time. Cost Brazil a goal by straying offside in the lead-up to Vini Jr’s tidy finish. Made way for Gabriel Jesus.

Brazil have found a way! They are through to the knockout stages, and become just the second team along with France to win both of their opening games.

Casemiro was the unlikely hero in Neymar’s absence, but what a strike it was. It earns Brazil their best start to a World Cup since 2002.

What happened then? Well, they only went and won it.

Brazil 1-0 Switzerland

17:45 , Jamie Braidwood

87 mins: All of a sudden, Brazil are heading into the last 16. Switzerland had all 11 men behind the ball and a point would have been huge for them.

There’s still time, though. That said, Switzerland have yet to have a shot on target.

GOAL! Brazil 1-0 Switzerland (CASEMIRO 83’)

17:40 , Jamie Braidwood

This one counts! Brazil find the breakthrough and it comes from an unlikely source! Cometh the hour, cometh the Casemiro.

The midfielder finds himself in the box after making a late run and slices a shot across goal. It takes a slight deflection, which sees the ball drift away from Sommer, and tucks into the far corner!

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:39 , Jamie Braidwood

81 mins: Antony takes the latest Brazil set-piece with a corner from the right. Sommer punches away before Guimaraes follows in with the header. Sommer saves again.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

79 mins: An awkward moment for Switzerland from the free kick as Antony bends one in. It takes a touch off a Switzerland head but Sommer collects.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

78 mins: Antony tries to make something happen on the right and is barged into by Rodriguez. Antony wants a yellow but the referee is unmoved.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

75 mins: Oh dear, Rodrygo. He balloons a free kick over everyone and out for a goal kick after Widmer had fouled Vinicius.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:30 , Jamie Braidwood

72 mins: More chances incoming for Brazil. Gabriel Jesus and Antony are on. Richarlison, unable to reproduce the magic of his double against Serbia, is off and so is Raphinha.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:28 , Jamie Braidwood

70 mins: Sad times, but we go on. Vinicius Jr then races around the outside of Akanji and wins a free-kick on the left edge. Switzerland are able to clear but Vinicius is running this game now and Brazil need to give him the ball at every opportunity.

NO GOAL! Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:23 , Jamie Braidwood

Noooo! Richarlison was offside in the build-up. It’s disallowed!

Richarlison was quite clearly offside, to be fair. It wasn’t obvious to see initially as he was coming back from an offside position.

GOAL! Brazil 1-0 Switzerland (VINICIUS JR 64’)

17:21 , Jamie Braidwood

SUBLIME! And Brazil needed this! Elvedi had been faultless up until now but makes a mistake as Brazil burst forward. Vinicius beats him to the ball with a lovely touch and drifts into the box, before opening his body and guiding a finish past Sommer!

Lovely, lovely goal.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:18 , Jamie Braidwood

60 mins: Better from Switzerland! They are growing in confidence and Embolo has a chance on the edge of the box. He had numbers over on his left but choses to shoot. It’s blocked by Marquinhos and Brazil clear.

They’ve still yet to test Alisson.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:16 , Jamie Braidwood

58 mins: Changes, changes, changes.

Bruno Guimaraes replaces Fred for Brazil while there are two for Swizterland. Vargas and Rieder are off and Fernandes and Steffen come on.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:14 , Jamie Braidwood

56 mins: CHANCE! Super from Vinicius! Brazil work it wide to the left and he plays a beautiful cross into the box with the outside of his right foot. Richarlison was close to sliding in but just couldn’t reach it.

At the other end Alisson was almost caught on the ball by Embolo moments before.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:13 , Jamie Braidwood

55 mins: Only one team at the World Cup have won both of their first two games, France. Brazil are looking to join them but this performance is showing just how hard it has been to do. There isn’t much separating the teams in Qatar and there doesn’t seem to be a standout.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:11 , Jamie Braidwood

53 mins: Action! Lovely switch from Switzerland, who ping it wide to the rampaging Widmer. Sandro slides in well to cut out the cross after Widmer brought it down, before Brazil scramble clear.

Switzerland then come again down the left as they win a corner. This is better.

Alisson collects the corner.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:09 , Jamie Braidwood

52 mins: Yikes. Raphinha’s cross is headed away from Xhaka - that has to be better - before Fred is booked for bringing down Embolo.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:08 , Jamie Braidwood

50 mins: Rodrygo catches a stray elbow from Rieder in the chin. He picks up the game’s first yellow card.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

17:05 , Jamie Braidwood

47 mins: Sommer gives the ball away cheaply but Brazil can’t take advantage as Richarlison’s cross is cleared. Thiago Silva then fouls Embolo on the halfway line.

KICK OFF! Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Pacqueta off! Rodrygo comes on. Fred survives!

HALF TIME: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Brazil are back in the tunnel and the second half is coming up. Rodrygo is coming on!

We. Can. Only. Hope. For. More.

HALF TIME: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:57 , Jamie Braidwood

At least Brazil have options. They probably don’t need Fred alongside Casemiro, as well as Pacqueta.

So... if Tite decides to change anything he only has Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Rodrygo and Antony all on the bench.

HALF TIME: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:51 , Jamie Braidwood

Another goalless first half at the World Cup. Perhaps we were a bit spoiled with 11 goals between Serbia vs Cameroon and Ghana vs South Korea earlier today.

Brazil had one big chance with Vinicius at the back post, from Raphinha’s excellent cross.

And that was it.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

45 mins: Fear not, though. The lights come back on immediately, as Sommer is forced to punch clear in the latest Brazil corner.

There will be one minute added on as Vargas forces a corner at the other end off Militao.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:45 , Jamie Braidwood

43 mins: Good again from Raphinha. He stands up Rodriguez and then quickly digs out a cross. Elvedi, who hasn’t missed a thing so far, heads away. Brazil can’t threaten from the corner, and then the lights go out at Stadium 974.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:42 , Jamie Braidwood

42 mins: Brazil look to turn defence into attack as Richarlison is released down the left. The pass pushes him wide and Akanji is too quick anyway. The Manchester City defender slides in to win the ball.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:40 , Jamie Braidwood

39 mins: Ooooh. Almost a lovely turn from Vargas. Rodriguez’s cross from the left is deflected and breaks to Vargas in the box. He has Thiago Silva behind and almost beats him with the turn, but then runs out of room as Alisson collects.

Quite exciting. But we’re heading for a goalless half.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:38 , Jamie Braidwood

37 mins: Militao shouldn’t be shooting, though. The ball sits up 25 yards out but it’s deflected out for a corner. Brazil take it short and Raphinha’s clipped ball from the byline is collected by Sommer.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:36 , Jamie Braidwood

36 mins: Brazil’s recovery in transitions has probably been the most impressive part of their performance so far, though. Casemiro, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Miltao all sharp to the Swiss counter.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:33 , Jamie Braidwood

33 mins: It’s been a better 10 minutes or so from Brazil, who are starting to find their wide men. Switzerland look to come forward on the break but Militao steps across Vargas brilliantly.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:31 , Jamie Braidwood

30 mins: SHOT! Raphinha again from the left. The ball sits up nicely 30 yards from goal and he takes aim. He catches it sweetly but it’s straight at Sommer.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:28 , Jamie Braidwood

26 mins: CHANCE! What a wonderful cross from Raphinha! He picks out Vinicius at the back post, totally unmarked. He is unable to get a good connection on the shot and Sommer can palm wide for a corner.

That was poor defending from Switzerland and Vinicius should have done better.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:25 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins: Vargas has another chance to cross from the left but again finds the first man.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:23 , Jamie Braidwood

23 mins: A quarter of the way in and we still await our first shot. Switzerland are doing well though.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:22 , Jamie Braidwood

21 mins: Brazil are able to work some space after Switzerland pressed them high and Pacqueta can drive on from the Number 10 position. His touch is heavy though and Elvedi cuts it out on the edge of the box.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:20 , Jamie Braidwood

19 mins: That’s better! The ball from Pacqueta is fired across the box and almost finds RIcharlison at the front post. Elvedi is there to clear. Good play from Pacqueta though.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:17 , Jamie Braidwood

17 mins: Apart from that Pacqueta flick, it’s all been very quiet from Brazil, very safe. Who’s going to take the chance for them? Who’s going to take charge with Neymar injured?

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:15 , Jamie Braidwood

15 mins: Casemiro brings down Embolo about 30 yards from goal. It’s pretty central as Xhaka stands over it, so Switzerland work it wide. But Vargas hits the first man with his cross from out side.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:13 , Jamie Braidwood

12 mins: Opening! Best moment of the game so far as Pacqueta flicks a sublime pass with the outside of his foot to Richarlison. It’s then cut back to Vinicius but Elvedi reads it well to clear.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:11 , Jamie Braidwood

11 mins: Fred’s been busy in these opening stages. He obviously brings something different to Neymar in the midfield. He tidies up on the edge of the box before Richarlison is fouled on the halfway line.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:09 , Jamie Braidwood

8 mins: There are lots of Brazil fans in Stadim 974 but the atmosphere feels a bit flat in these opening stages. Switzerland seem to have settled well and are beginning to knock the ball around.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:05 , Jamie Braidwood

5 mins: Xhaka, who was very good in Switzerland’s opener, flips a ball around the corner towards Embolo. The Swiss striker gets on his bike but Alisson races out of his box to clear. Alisson then almost gets into trouble as he passes out from the back, but Brazil are able to clear up.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

16:03 , Jamie Braidwood

3 mins: Vinicius goes on his first run down the Brazil left. Widmer, who will be seeing a lot of Vinicius today, gives away a foul with a shove on the wing. Brazil swing it into the box but it goes all the way though. Richarlison looked closest.

The players are in the tunnel and kick-off is moments away! Brazil are looking focussed. Neymar’s injury will place more responsibility on the shoulders of Richarlison, Vinicius Jr and Raphinha. But maybe it’s also an opportunity to shine, as Richarlison showed in the opening victory over Serbia.

It is one of the regular moments of harsh reality that takes you out of the illusion that is this World Cup. As the taxi driver drops the group off, there is a sudden plea. It is not for a five-star rating.

“Can you give me a tip please?”, he asks. “I have no money to eat.”

The driver, of south Asian descent, sends almost everything he earns back to his family. This is supposed to be the long-awaited period when such workers can generate income due to the number of visitors to Qatar but here is another who is just starving.

Anyone who has been in Doha for the first week of this World Cup would have had many similar stories pass in front of their eyes. The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre said on Sunday that there had been six cases of migrant worker abuse reported in that time alone.

This is the side of the World Cup that Qatar would prefer you ignore, writes Miguel Delaney.

It has become the most famous Brazilian ankle of all. Neymar posted a picture of it on Instagram, ballooned to far more than its normal size, enough to send a nation of over 200 million people into panic mode. Battered by Serbia, as he was fouled nine times, Neymar’s ankle took the added strain of a further 11 minutes on the pitch before he informed manager Tite he was hurt.

Now he is out, Tite was swift to rebuff suggestions his tournament is over. Citing the two players who are sidelined after Brazil’s opening win, he said: “I believe Neymar and Danilo will be playing [again in] the World Cup. That is my opinion. Medically and clinically I am not in the position to speak about those things but I also have medical reports on my side.”

If it was designed to be soothing, given the prospect of histrionics in his homeland, Brazilians could be forgiven for feeling anxious. They have seemed to have an acute form of Neymar dependencia. He will not face Switzerland on Monday and the last time he was ruled out of a World Cup game, Brazil promptly suffered the most infamous, most ignominious result in their history, the 7-1 thrashing by Germany.

Earlier in Group G, Cameroon scored two late goals to claim a thrilling 3-3 draw with Serbia.

Serbia struck twice in added time before the interval through Strahinja Pavlovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to turn the game on its head after Jean-Charles Castelletto had given Cameroon the lead. Serbia went 3-1 up when Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his first goal of the tournament early in the second period.

But the Africans responded in spectacular fashion as substitute Vincent Aboubakar and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting both scored in the space of three minutes to haul their side level.

Cameroon avoided a record-equalling ninth successive World Cup finals defeat, but while both nations retained hopes of reaching the last 16, Brazil and Switzerland remain favourites to progress from the group.

Indeed, both Brazil and Switzerland know that victory will book their place in the last 16. For Switzerland, they know that even if they lose tonight, a draw against Serbia should be enough.

Brazil boss Tite believes the injured Neymar will play again at the Qatar World Cup as he spoke about the fouling of players that “has to be stopped”.

Neymar limped off late on when Brazil opened their Group G campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia on Thursday.

And on Friday the team’s doctor revealed that both the Paris St Germain forward and defender Danilo would miss Monday’s clash with Switzerland due to ankle issues.

Neymar was said to have a “lateral ligament injury to (his) right ankle along with a small bone swelling”.

Brazil make two changes from their opening win over Serbia. Both are enforced, with Fred replacing Neymar in midfield and Eder Militao coming in for Danilo at right back. That means Dani Alves does not come into the side, as many may have hoped. It’s the same elsewhere, although Lucas Paqueta should push further forward following the absence of Neymar, with Fred sitting alongside Casemiro.

Swizerland boss Murat Yakin says the absence of Neymar does not make the challenge of facing Brazil any easier.

“It doesn’t change anything for us,” he said. “We analyse the team and the role of each player. If a player can’t play, we talk about it.

“But I think they will manage to replace Neymar well and we need to be prepared. Neymar will not play, but we have to focus on our own work.”

Neymar has been ruled out of the group stages because of an ankle injury. The forward started in midfield against Serbia, so could be replaced by Fred here with Lucas Pacqueta pushing further forward. Gabriel Jesus and Rodrygo may also hope to start.

Brazil right back Danilo has also been ruled out, which means 39-year-old Dani Alves should come in.

Switzerland have no fresh injury concerns and could be unchanged.

Brazil face Switzerland in Group G of the World Cup. The Selecao are without key forward Neymar due to an ankle injury but can book their place in the knockout stages if they beat the Swiss, following Brazil’s 2-0 win over Serbia on Thursday.

Richarlison was the star of Brazil’s opening win after scoring a stunning overhead kick, while Brazil also have an abundance of attacking talent to come in and replace Neymar - who is expected to be out for the remainder of the group stages.

Switzerland defeated Cameroon 1-0 in their opening match thanks to Breel Embolo’s winner and would also qualify for the last 16 if they managed to shock the five-time winners Brazil.

Earlier, Serbia and Cameroon played out a thrilling 3-3 earlier in the other match of Group G, a result that was a boost to Switzerland’s chances of making it through to the knockout stages. Brazil, meanwhile, are looking to join defending champions France as the only teams to win both of their matches so far.
