Brazil 4 South Korea 1

By Jason Burt at 974 Stadium

This was just like watching Brazil. From his hospital bed in Sao Paulo, as he fights colon cancer, Pele was among the viewers and he saw the kind of dazzling, swaggering display that rolled back the years for the Selecao and sent out a statement to the rest of the world. Joga Bonito, with those illustrious shirts, jogged the memories. This was the Brazil of Pele.

The 82-year-old also saw Neymar return, after injury, and score the goal that takes him within one of Pele’s all-time record of 77 for Brazil; he saw a performance full of samba sweetness, with a kick like a Caipirinha cocktail, and he saw the confirmation that his countrymen are rightly the favourites to win this tournament.

At the final whistle Neymar and Danilo, who had both been substituted, returned to the centre circle to unfurl a banner in tribute to Pele. They were joined by their team-mates while four legends – Ronaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Rivaldo – happily watched from the stands.

Brazil now face Croatia in the quarter-finals on Friday. They have gone out to European opposition at every World Cup since 2002, and though Luka Modric and co will be more wily than South Korea, who were naive, overwhelmed and chased the game after falling behind (and whose Portuguese coach Paulo Bento quit as their campaign ended), they will surely not stand in Brazil’s way. Prior to kick-off South Korea’s captain Son Heung-min puffed out his cheeks as he stood in the tunnel. He looked like he knew what was coming.

In the build-up to the last-16 tie, Pele had posted on social media a faded colour photograph of himself as a 17-year-old in Stockholm, in 1958, having promised his father he would help Brazil win their first World Cup. He did just that and is still the only player to have done so three times. In his post he declared that he would be watching this tie and Brazil took notice. “I want to inspire you my friends,” he wrote. And he did just that.

After a wait of 20 years Brazil believe they are destined to win it again and on this form it will take an incredible effort to prevent them as they celebrated the return of Neymar who had limped out of their opening group game against Serbia with an ankle injury.

“I did not feel any pain,” Neymar said afterwards. “When I got injured I spent a very difficult night, I was thinking of a million different things and I was afraid I might not play in the World Cup.”

The forward kissed the ball before nonchalantly stroking home the penalty that was one of four goals in an extraordinarily dominant first-half with Richarlison scoring – and now laying claim to the best two goals at this World Cup after his spectacular volley against the Serbs – along with Vinicius Junior and Lucas Paqueta. Each was followed by a group huddle and a different dance – almost as choreographed as the goals themselves. Even coach Tite joined in. “They have a language which is dancing,” he said, dismissing sour claims that it showed a lack of respect.

The accusation that can be levelled against Brazil is that after the flurry of goals there were signs of selfishness, as Richarlison and Neymar tried to add to their tally, and a touch of showboating. But only after they got the job done with a ruthlessness that will strike fear.

Yes, Alisson was forced into some fine saves as South Korea courageously kept going but no one ever thought Brazil were in danger of throwing this away or did not have a couple of gears to ease through should their opponents have claimed more than their fine, late consolation goal.

Brazil were just too quick and too powerful, as well as too skilful, for the runners-up in Group G, who had finished ahead of Uruguay and Ghana having beaten Portugal in their last tie. That should be the takeaway from this tie. It was summed up in their goals starting with the first, with Vinicius Junior teed up by Raphinha and coolly chipping the ball beyond a despairing raft of South Korean defenders.

Those defenders were panicking and it led to the second goal as Jung Woo-young kicked out wildly with an attempted clearance, catching Richarlison. The penalty was given and Neymar waited calmly, as goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu danced along his line before rolling the ball past him.

The pick of the goals? It was emphatically the third. Richarlison juggled the ball on his head one, two, three, four times, flicked it in the air once, twice and the third time with a pass to Marquinhos on the edge of the penalty area who squared it to Thiago Silva, with the Tottenham forward running over it. Silva threaded it through to Richarlison and he sidefooted home. Wait? Both centre-halves were just outside the South Korean area? It said it all.

The fourth? Brazil countered with Neymar flicking a pass to his left to find Vinicius Junior. As players swarmed into the area he lofted his cross to the onrushing Paqueta who volleyed it home.

South Korea kept going and got their reward when a free-kick was only cleared as far as substitute Paik Seung-ho. Twenty yards out he drove the ball back through a crowd before Tite brought on third-choice goalkeeper Weverton meaning Brazil had used all 26 of their players. It showed their togetherness.

Brazil 4 South Korea 1: as it happened

09:49 PM

Final: Brazil sweep past South Korea

A sensational display in the first half from Brazil. They scored four goals, they celebrated with four joyful dances (which some people reckoned was a bit disrespectful) and some of their football was of the very highest quality. Richarlison's goal, particularly, was a lovely thing. It should be said that South Korea were hugely over-ambitious in attempting to go toe-to-toe with them. Still, none of the other nine teams still alive in the World Cup will relish facing Brazil now, not least because Neymar seemed to have come back fit and firing. The second half was a formality and Tite was able to rest some players, even giving his third-choice keeper a run out. The players had a banner for the ailing Pele at the end.

They will face Croatia in the quarter-final this Saturday at 3pm. Croatia had a considerably tougher assignment today in the other last-16 match so might be more jaded, but on the other hand, maybe more battle-hardened. It will be an intriguing clash. Thanks a lot for following this one with us, this is me, Alan Tyers, signing off. Cheers.

09:23 PM

Squad game these days

By bringing on the third choice keeper there, Tite has now used all 26 players in his squad. They are the first side in World Cup history to use as many as 26 players, says Opta.

I think the mighty stats site are carefully not committing to whether everyone in the squad has ever had a go before. Presumably some of those old boys in 1934 etc didn't have like rafts of subs.

Here's Richarlison on the dancing: "We rehearse that celebration together with coach in the hotel and I am happy we had a chance to use it.”

After the match he had comforted a tearful Son. “Football is like that,” Richarlison added. “One is going to win. One is going to lose. I wish him all the best because we need him at Tottenham.”

09:20 PM

Nice stat

09:19 PM

Positives for the South Koreans?

Well, the match is over, for one. Also, Hwang Hee-chan had a really good game up front. Seung-ho Paik scored a belter. And, you know what, Alisson actually had to make three seriously good saves. But they paid the price for committing too many may forward too soon. At 2-0 it was like they went, well, we might as well not die wondering. They might have been better off shutting up shop at 0-2 and hoping that the storm passed or Brazil got sloppy.

But, like, Brazil are a lot better than South Korea are at football. The Asian side weren't 13/1 to win in 90 minutes because this was a tough fixture for the South Americans.

Do you think that anyone can stop Brazil?

They looked unplayable in that first half. BUT surely other sides won't go toe-to-toe with them like South Korea did. Croatia will have a lot more nous. Whether they can compete with the movement, I'm not so sure.

Full time: Brazil 4 South Korea 1

Absolutely delightful stuff in the first half as Brazil hit top form to put four past South Korea. The game was over by half time but to be fair to South Korea, they did 'win' the second half thanks to a fine hit by Paik Seung-ho. Brazil will now face Croatia in the quarter-finals, and if they touch the heights they did in the first half here, we can say tatty-bye to Luka Modric and pals.

Four goals they score, notable for their interplay and their beauty. It was really striking how much they seemed to delight in each other's play. Richarlison's, when he juggled the ball on his head before launching some dazzling interplay, was maybe the best. Neymar looked fit and in form and scored a cute penalty. Hopefully it will have put a smile on the face of Pele.

Talking of Alisson, he's taken off. A sentimental rather than injury sub. Weverton, the third-choice keeper, is going to have a few minutes.

Neymar also withdrawn. Rodrygo's on. Not to be confused with Stilgoe's On (1986)

GOAL! Brazil 4 South Korea 1 (Seung-ho Paik 76)

A freekick for South Korea, headed half clear by the Brazil backl line, and then absolutely lashed by the sub Seung-Ho Paik for a screamer of a finish. Bosh! He really wellied that, it seems to have caught somebody on the way through and that's a consolation at least for the South Koreans.

71 mins: Brazil 4 South Korea 0

I'm not arguing for a second that this has been anything other than an absolute beasting. But South Korea have been thwarted on three occasions by seriously good stops from Alisson. Would only have been academic - ie I think if one had gone in, Brazil would have tightened up and raised their game. But just noting that there are chances to score against this side.

Na Sang-ho crunches a shot at goal. Alisson sticks out a hand and half stops it, the ball strikes Cho Gue-sung, who was on the deck just behind Alisson after a scramble. Oh no - has he inadvertently prevented a consolation goal?!!? Ah, I think he was offside anyway.

In-Beom Hwang is coming off. Has the good grace to look disappointed but you would not blame the Korean guys if they wanted to just get in the rooms and forget this ever happened.

Seung-Ho Paik is the lucky camper who comes on.

Joy

Tom Morgan writes:

"In the cynical world of modern football, that was a half to fall madly, deeply back in love with the game. Brazil at their irresistible best. Intuitive, flamboyant, arrogant....worthy of any team in their glorious history.

Vinicius Jr was literally playing with a smile on his face. It felt so pure, so far away from the week in, week out of the Premier League, where 12 of this squad ply their trade.

This World Cup has been framed by many back in Brazil as an opportunity to reclaim the yellow shirt after Neymar, in particular, prompted anger by appearing in videos backing outgoing far right leader Bolsonaro. They've gone some way to doing that in this last-16 fixture."

Half time: Brazil 4 South Korea 0

An absolute roasting. Wow. What a half of football. South Korea committed men forward despite heavy losses, seemingly oblivious to the fact that they were leaving their back four (the four Kims) up against four Brazil forwards without support. Massacre. About the best thing you can say for South Korea is that it could have been more...

07:52 PM

45+ mins: Brazil 4 South Korea 0

It should be seven! South Korea again ripped open like a wet paper bag and Brazil have any number of routes to applying the finish as they power into the box. Its Richarlison who neglects to pass and tries to slot it across the keeper himself. Denied.

It's four! Another lovely team move. Neymar carries it down the inside left channel and plays it to Vinicius Jr, who chips the ball up with an outrageous little scoop, perfectly into the path of Lucas P who strokes the ball home. More delightful celebrations. South Korea are getting ripped apart. They are still committing loads of men forward. I guess it doesn't matter if you lose 4-0 or 8-0 but they are just leaving themselves so open.

GOAL! Brazil 3 South Korea 0 (Richarlison 29)

WICKED goal! Love this. Richarlison bounces the ball three times on his head. Plays a ball to Marquinhos and surges into the box. Marquinhos slips it to Casemiro, who plays it through for the onrushing Richarlison. He barely has to check his stride as he purrs onto the ball, controls and tucks it away.

A team goal of true beauty and skill.

The Brazil players all embrace and hug each other, dancing around. The subs are having their own little party on the sidelines.

Now Tite is joining in the dancing! This is great. The vibes are off the scale and they are going to take some beating in this tournament.

Richarlison is fouled in the box and the ref has no hesitation. Penalty! Kim Moon-hwan had tried to hack the ball clear, Richo sort of slid in and he ended up booting Richarlison instead. 9 mins: Brazil 1 South Korea 0

South Korea are under huge pressure here. It's all Brazil. The movement and interplay is excellent. Koreans are reduced to fouling.

Here is Tom Morgan:

"Richarlison has talked previously of the Brazil players deciding on certain celebratory dances in the dressing room pre-match and that was a particularly joyful one sparked by Vinicius Jr's opener.

It's only a shame that it wasn't watched by a full stadium. There are at least 1,500 empty seats here, which is amazing given Brazil managed to fill the 88,000 Lusail Stadium a couple of times."

"A far from ideal send off for Stadium 974, built with 974 shipping containers, and set to be dismantled after this match. However, the Brazilians and South Koreans who have turned up have been making a decent ding.

It was a big call from Tite getting Neymar back in and he had been looking  lively ahead of the opener. He's only had one full practice since twisting his ankle against Serbia in Brazil's opening match. It's seems unlikely he will play the full 90."

06:34 PM

Those teams again

Brazil forward Neymar will start for the five-times champions in their World Cup last-16 match against South Korea on Monday after recovering from an ankle injury.

Full back Danilo was also cleared to play and will start on the left side of defence, as both Alex Sandro and Alex Telles were ruled out by injuries.

Both Neymar and Danilo suffered ankle injuries in Brazil's opening 2-0 win over Serbia, which meant they missed the 1-0 win over Switzerland and the 1-0 defeat by Cameroon, when coach Tite rotated his team to keep most of his key players fresh.

Centre back Eder Militao, who replaced Danilo at right back against Switzerland, will play against South Korea in the same role.

South Korea coach Paulo Bento made two changes to his starting 11, replacing Kwon Kyung-won and Lee Kang-in with defender Kim Min-jae and forward Hwang Hee-chan, who was the hero of their comeback 2-1 win against Portugal, coming off the bench to score the winner in stoppage time.

Here be the teams.

Brazil: Alisson; Eder Militao, Thiago Silva (captain), Marquinhos, Danilo, Casemiro, Lucas Paqueta, Neymar, Vinicius Jr., Raphinha, Richarlison.

South Korea: Kim Seung-gyu, Kim Moon-hwan, Kim Min-jae, Kim Young-gwon, Kim Jin-su, Lee Jae-sung, Jung Woo-young, Jeong Woo-yeong, Hwang In-beom, Son Heung-min (captain), Hwang Hee-chan, Cho Gue-sung.

Great news for Kim fans, that's another clean sweep of the back four and the keeper.

But they certainly did the business in the shootout. Well, they were less awful than Japan, anyway.

The bookies at least don't seem to believe that we will need spot-kicks in this one. Brazil are about 1/3 on to win in 90. South Korea 13/1. The draw in 90 minutes is 5/1.

Neymar returns

It's the moment Brazil fans have been waiting for: Neymar returns for the national side after missing the second and third matches of the group stage through injury.

The PSG forward played against Serbia, but was subbed off in the second half.

As noted earlier, Brazil have been plagued with injuries, with Eder Militao starting at full back in the absence of Alex Telles and Alex Sandro. Danilo, who will also start at full-back, had been a doubt, but makes the starting line-up.

The midfield and forwards are the same which started the opener against Serbia, with Neymar expected to take a slightly deeper role than usual.

Pele wishes Brazil luck

Brazilian great Pele offered support to national team ahead of their last 16 match against South Korea, saying he will watch the game from hospital after being admitted there last week as he battles colon cancer.

Pele, 82, said in an Instagram post that he wished to inspire Brazil's players by sharing a picture taken at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, when the then-teenager shocked the world leading the South American side to their first title.

"I'll watch the game from here at the hospital and I'll be rooting for each one of you," Pele said ahead of the match.

"We are on this journey together. Good luck to our Brazil!"

Brazil go into the match after losing their last match against Cameroon. They won their opening match 2-0 against Serbia, with two goals from Richarlison, and followed that up with a 1-0 win over Switzerland, thanks to a winner from Casemiro.

Brazil's star player, Neymar, is set to return to the team after missing the Switzerland and Cameroon matches through injury.

They have been struggling injury-wise, with only one natural full-back available after left-back Alex Telles suffered a knee injury in the Cameroon defeat.

Full backs Danilo and Alex Sandro are out after injuries suffered earlier in the competition and their availability is still unclear.
