‘Brazen act of violence’ left Uber driver dead in his car, CA cops say. Two arrested

Two people were arrested in connection with the “brazen act of violence” during a robbery that left an Uber driver dead in July, California officials said.

Police arrested Major Willis and a “juvenile” on Tuesday, Aug. 9 in connection with the homicide of Kon Fung on July 17, the Oakland Police Department said in a news release on Facebook.

“The brazen act of these individuals caused a ripple effect on Fung’s family and the surrounding community,” the department said in the Aug. 12 news release.

Fung, 52, was working in East Oakland in July on 13th Avenue when two individuals approached, opened his car door and shot him, McClatchy News previously reported.

“It’s a tragedy for this community and a tragedy for the city and a tremendous loss,” Oakland’s Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said at a news conference the day following the fatal shooting.

To help assist in their investigation, police released a surveillance video from July’s attack.

Willis, 19, has been charged with felony murder and carjacking and the juvenile, whose name has not been released, is facing charges in juvenile court, according to a news releases from the Alameda County District Attorney’s office. Willis is being held without bail, jail records show.

Armstrong thanked the community “for supporting the department and providing information that helped in this case,” according to the news release.

Fung immigrated from Hong Kong eight years ago and was remembered as a “hard-working man,” who worked two jobs to support his family, according to a GoFundMe for Fung’s family.

“He worked tirelessly so he could move his entire family to a safe area to avoid the violence,” the GoFundMe said. “He had a very humble American dream but was taken away from his family and loved ones through the very violence that he was trying to avoid.”
