Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale are set to reunite in new spy thriller Best of Enemies.

The duo, who starred in 2013's Academy Award-nominated American Hustle, will join forces once more for the film, the rights for which have been won by MGM Studios and Amazon (via Deadline).

The movie, which will have a theatrical release, will be based on the non-fiction novel Best of Enemies: The Last Great Spy Story of the Cold War, written by Eric Dezenhall and Gus Russo.

The official synopsis for book is as follows: "The thrilling story of two Cold War spies, CIA case officer Jack Platt and KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko – improbable friends at a time when they should have been anything but."

Cooper will play Platt and Bale will play Vasilenko, the pair attempting to convince each other into betraying their respective countries, despite their personal friendship.

No director has been confirmed, but Eric Warren Singer will reportedly write the script, and Oppenheimer's Charles Roven will produce, both of whom also worked on American Hustle.

Cooper's most recent role has been as legendary composer Leonard Bernstein in a biopic of the musician's life, Maestro. The film currently sits at an 81% critics score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, despite controversy surrounding the use of a prosthetic nose by Cooper.

Cooper also serves as a producer on the upcoming Joker sequel starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux.

Bale, meanwhile, stars in the English-language version of Studio Ghibli film The Boy and the Heron, alongside a stellar voice cast featuring Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson and more.

It is his second film from the legendary anime studio, having previously voiced a character in 2004's Howl's Moving Castle.

The Boy and the Heron was released in US cinemas on December 8, following special previews from November 22. It will arrive in UK cinemas on December 26.
