Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard Are Untrustworthy Married Spies in Latest 'Allied' Trailer

In case you hadn’t heard, Brad Pitt has been having a rough couple of weeks, what with the break-up of his marriage to Angelina Jolie, a reported abuse investigation by L.A. child welfare authorities to defend himself against, and gossipy insinuations about the relationship between Pitt and his Allied co-star Marion Cotillard, which the actress shot down in an Instagram post. With all this off-screen drama as a backdrop, a new trailer for Allied (watch it above) has arrived, and it further underscores the fraught-with-peril romance central to its World War II tale.

The film, directed by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future), focuses on American and French assassins (Pitt and Cotillard) who are each tasked with killing the other. Their mirror-image missions, however, are thrown into disarray when they meet and fall in love, though as this trailer makes all-too-clear (spoiler-phobes beware), their amour is further complicated when Pitt is told by his superiors that his wife (the mother of his child) may in fact be a German spy.

The result, from all appearances, is a wartime saga akin to a stylish, action-packed cross between Zemeckis’ What Lies Beneath and Pitt’s prior art-imitating-life effort Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Whether it achieves its epic romantic-thriller intentions — and/or provides further grist for the celebrity-tabloid mill — will be revealed when Allied lands in theaters on Nov. 23.
