He bought a SC lottery ticket during a bathroom break — then came a sleepless night

A South Carolina man was stopping at a gas station to use the bathroom when he bought a lottery ticket that paid off big time.

While at the business, he first tried his luck on scratch-offs that won him $20. When he went back inside to cash in on that prize, he bought another ticket that was worth $200,000, according to the S.C. Education Lottery.

“My heart dropped,” the man said, recalling the moment he checked his latest winning ticket. “I jumped out of the car and threw the ticket on the store counter and asked them to scan it to be sure.”

The prize was the real deal, and the winner said he had trouble sleeping that night. He was shaking when he claimed his prize, which totaled $138,000 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.

The man — who declined to be publicly identified — took home the extra cash after he switched up his routine.

“I usually stop at the store across the street, but it was busy after a Clemson game,” he told officials in a Jan. 25 news release.

The man ended up making a pit stop at Xpress Fuel in Pendleton, near the university and roughly 35 miles southwest of Greenville. While at the gas station, he picked up a soda and the scratch-offs that were worth $20.

The winner later snagged more tickets, spending $5 on the one that beat 1-in-750,000 odds to hit the jackpot. After scoring the big win in the Triple Red 777s game, the man said he and his wife bought a car and hope to remodel their house.

“On a whim I bought that ticket,” he told the S.C. Education Lottery. “Now we’re getting to do some stuff we’ve always wanted to do.”

It’s not the first time a spur-of-the-moment decision led to a windfall.

In February, officials said a man buying a candy bar suddenly decided to buy a lottery ticket and won a South Carolina prize.

And early in the coronavirus pandemic, a North Carolina man randomly played a lottery game online and got a big surprise, McClatchy News reported in April 2020.
