‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Reveals an Intense New Trailer

We're less than a month away from the return of Katniss Everdeen to the big screen, and if excitement weren't already at a fever pitch, the newest trailer for the next "Hunger Games" movie was unveiled during an appropriately huge sporting event: Game 4 of the World Series. Of course, the players for the Red Sox and the Cardinals didn't have to worry about getting shot with an arrow or speared by a trident in their competition.

The new "Catching Fire" trailer is only a minute long, but it's still packed with thrilling, previously unseen footage, including the fi

rst real look at the action inside the arena as Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) compete in the Quarter Quell against other hardened, deadly survivors of previous Hunger Games. Watch the preview, then scroll down to get a closer look at some of the most intense moments.

Heavy stuff, huh? Here are the eight moments that stand out the most:

Eye in the Sky
The trailer starts with the familiar sight of Katniss climbing a tree, as she did several times in the first movie. But this time she draws an arrow and takes aim at the sky above the arena. Katniss stares it down, knowing full well that President Snow (Donald Sutherland) is watching her. It's a great way to set up the two opposing forces of the rebellion and the Capitol... and, judging from the look on his face, maybe something else altogether. This moment also serves to give the audiences a glimpse at the panorama of the arena, which, as eagle eyes surely caught, explains why the hashtag for this trailer was #TickTock.

Girl on Fire
Katniss and Peeta once again ride into the Capitol on a chariot with their fiery outfits. Snow stares down Katniss, which she returns for a moment before looking away. Even it if weren't for Lawrence's smoldering intensity, this moment deserves recognition for her intense eye makeup alone. Looks like Cinna was working his magic once again.

Aim High
To prepare for the Games, Katniss is put through a rigorous training regimen complete with holographic targets. She pulls back her trusty bow and lets loose an arrow as a digital attacker leaps for her.

"Prim!"
Katniss shouts out the name of her younger sister, the one whose place she took during "the reaping" in the first movie. Then we see the trees around the Cornucopia start to collapse. You start to see just how much bigger this movie looks than the first.

Beware the Mist
Katniss sees a dense fog start to roll into the arena. If you've read the book, you know why this is bad news. She reaches out to touch it, but pulls her hand back just in time.

Monkey Business
Once again, the arena is populated with genetically-altered creatures. This time around, Peeta comes face-to-face with a band of very angry monkeys. In another upgrade from the previous film, the visual effects for the creatures here look far more advanced than the CG dogs at the climax of the first installment.

Hitchcock Tribute
In a scene right out of "The Birds," Katniss runs through the jungle as a swarm of aerial attackers fly around. And either Katniss is secretly a professional mime, or she runs into an invisible force field which separates her from Peeta.

Glass Case of Emotion
As Peeta yells so she can hear him through the force field (our helpful commenters believe he's saying "It's not real," which will have greater resonance in the final chapter, "Mockingjay"), Katniss breaks down. We see her screaming, hands covering her ears, as the birds flap around her. We're not used to seeing the usually unflappable Miss Everdeen in such a raw, panicked state. If the trailer hadn't convinced you already, the final shot makes it clear that the rules of the game have changed this time around.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opens November 22.
