Xavier Dolan: Why you should know this Montreal filmmaker

Who is Xavier Dolan and why is he trending?

If you're Canadian, you should probably know the answer, particularly now that it has been announced that the young Quebecois filmmaker's third film, "Laurence Anyways," is going to Cannes.

But for those of you still in the dark, here's a quick primer on Dolan:

French readers may remember Dolan as a child actor from films such as "J'en suis!" and "Le marchand de sable," or the TV show "Omertà, la loi du silence." Dolan's more recent acting work includes voicing the Stan character in the French version of "South Park." However, the now-23-year-old Dolan is attracting plenty of attention as one of the bright new film directors to come out of Montreal.

Dolan wrote and directed his first movie, "J'ai Tue Ma Mere," when he was just 20 (although he reportedly began writing the film when he was 16). The film, a semiautobiographical tale about a gay son and his mother, won three awards in the Director's Fornight program at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

A year later, Dolan was welcomed back at Cannes with a standing ovation for his meditation on a gay love triangle, "Les Amours Imaginaires" (aka "Heartbeats"). The film screened in the Un Certain Regard category, which is reserved for young talent.

Thursday morning, it was announced that Dolan's latest project, "Laurence Anyways," will bring him back to Cannes and to the Un Certain Regard category. His third film stars French actor Melvil Poupaud and revolves around a man whose heterosexual relationship falters when he reveals he wants to have a sex change.

So, if you still haven't heard much about Dolan yet, just wait. It's probably only a matter of time before he takes over the film industry.
