Who said it: Tris Prior or Katniss Everdeen?

Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) of “Divergent” is the latest female protagonist that we have come to adore. She’s shy and nervous, yet she’s also determined and smart -- and in the world of young adult fiction, there’s always room for more strong female characters rising to the occasion.

But we couldn’t help but notice some similarities between Tris and another popular female lead: the strong-willed Katniss Everdeen of the “Hunger Games” franchise. Both characters struggle with managing family responsibilities, leaving behind their childhood, and learning how to trust and love.

With so many striking similarities we want to put you to test – who said what… and why? Take our quiz below to see how much of a “Divergent” fan you really are:

“If we have little, and want for little, and we are all equal, we envy no one.”

Who said it?

Tris
Why? While this quote is reminiscent of Katniss and Gale Hawthorne talking about fighting back against the Capitol’s societal control, this is actually a moment when Tris is explaining Abnegation, the faction she was born into. Early in the book we see Tris contemplating the ideals of her birth faction, how they measure up to the other factions, and where she fits in.

"I stare in the mirror as I try to remember who I am and who I am not."

Who said it?

Katniss
Why? Bet you thought this was a quote from Tris. Yes, both our female heroines literally reflect upon their appearance and who they are by staring at mirrors, but this time it’s Katniss who is struggling with her identity. Here, she is trying to remember who she is after returning home after winning the Hunger Games.

Who said it?

Katniss
Why? There are moments throughout “Divergent” when Tris realizes that she is developing into an attractive Dauntless woman, but this is actually an example of Katniss realizing she is an unconventional beauty. She says this as Cinna delivers her interview dress in the Capitol - she can’t quite accept her beauty.

“I throw my arms out to the side and imagine that I am flying... My heart beats so hard it hurts, and I can’t scream and I can’t breathe, but I also feel everything, every vein, and every fiber, every bone and every nerve, all awake and buzzing in my body as if charged with electricity.  I am pure adrenaline.” (Via Tumblr)

Who said it?

Tris
Why? Even though this might remind us of the liberation Katniss feels when she’s hunting in the woods, this is actually from "Divergent" when Tris lets go of her past and accepts her Dauntless future. She is ziplining through the city, a common routine among the faction.

“Because I’m selfish. I’m a coward. I’m the kind of girl who, when she might actually be of use, would run to stay alive and leave those who couldn’t follow to suffer and die.”

Who said it?

Katniss
Why? There are a handful of times in “Divergent’ when Tris questions her strength and ability to become Dauntless but this is actually a quote by Katniss in “Catching Fire.” She is still coming to terms with winning the Hunger Games with Peeta, but is also questioning her  loyalty to her family and Gale.

“My father used to say that sometimes, the best way to help someone is just to be near them. I feel good when I do something I know he would be proud of, like it makes up for all the things I've done that he wouldn't be proud of.”

Who said it?

Tris
Why? In “Divergent,” Tris is going through that phase in life when you question your parents. It does remind us about Katniss recalling life lessons from her father who died in a mining accident, but this is an example of Tris showing her Divergence by believing in values from both the Abnegation and Dauntless factions.
