Unrecognizable stars at TIFF 2014

The Toronto International Film Festival attracts plenty of famous stars, but quite a few celebrities were practically incognito this year due to their new and drastically different looks. A number of other actors have changed their appearance in a number of weird and wonderful ways -- from merely growing up to growing a beard -- to the point that we can hardly tell who they are anymore.

Here's a look at some of the unrecognizable stars in Toronto:

The girl with the dragon tattoo looked like her polar opposite at the premiere of "The Drop." Swedish actress Noomi Rapace had dropped her short black hair for long blond locks and bleached eyebrows. According to The Toronto Star, the new look is for two other films she's currently working on.

Kevin Costner

In his TIFF film "Black and White," he looks like the Kevin Costner we know and love. But at the TIFF premiere on Sept. 7, the 59-year-old actor had virtually dissapeared beneath a full salt and pepper beard. Photos from the set of his next film, "Criminal," suggest he grew the impressive facial hair for the CIA thriller.

Jena Malone, the former child actress who is perhaps best recognized for her role as raven-haired vixen Johanna Mason in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," shocked us when she showed up at TIFF. Promoting her new flick "Time Out of Mind," Malone appeared with her normally brown hair dyed blond. She actually changed her hair last year for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s "Inherent Vice," but kept it because she liked it.

Yes, that is the kid from "The Sixth Sense." Now 26, former child star Haley Joel Osment arrived at TIFF to promote Kevin Smith's "Tusk" looking very much the grown up, complete with impressive facial hair. He is currently working on Smith's next film, "Yoga Hosers," which explains his look.

Olivia Williams

With her blunt bangs and dark hair, British actress Olivia Williams looked very different in Toronto while promoting David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars." She looked nothing like the windswept object of Bill Murray's affection in "Rushmore" or Bruce Willis's harried wife in "The Sixth Sense. As it turns out, the actress went dark and short for Cronenberg's film.

Haley Joel Osment wasn't the only former child star at TIFF who shocked us with his grown-up look. "Hugo" and "Ender's Game" star Asa Butterfield also showed up to the fest (to promote "X+Y") as an unrecognizably tall 17 year old. Though we would recognize those piercing blue eyes anywhere.

The 2014 Toronto International Film Festival runs through to Sept. 14.
