Six things we learned from the Toronto premiere of ‘Divergent’

If you haven’t heard of “Divergent" yet, there's a good chance you will soon.

The first book-turned-movie in the trilogy of novels set in a dystopian future Chicago hits theatres later this month, but it's already generating a lot of buzz -- and some are even saying it could be bigger than "The Hunger Games."

Last week, the film's lead actors Shailene Woodley (Tris) and Theo James (Four) braved the chilly Canadian weather to walk the red carpet for the film’s Canadian premiere, and Yahoo Canada was there for it all. Here’s six things we learned from the event:

1) Dauntless has its own fighting technique

In “Divergent,” a big part of being accepted into the Dauntless faction (Tris’s faction of choice) is physical training – but not just your regular moves.

“We did a bunch of, sort of, basic physical fitness, and then we did a lot of fight choreography,” 22-year-old Woodley told Yahoo Canada. “Our stunt co-ordinator came up with this new fighting technique which was sort of a mix between Muay Thai and prison fighting and a few other martial arts. Between the two of them, they created this fight technique that was very specific to Dauntless.”

“It was a lot of memorization of that and learning how to work that into our choreography.”

2) Theo James pantsed Shailene Woodley on set

It’s no question that “Divergent,” was a physically demanding film to shoot – but James said that didn’t stop cast members from having some fun on set.

“We found the fun a lot of times, and I think that’s important in a way when you’re doing a serious scene,” he told Yahoo Canada. “The ability to realize the lightness and fun in a scene when you’re finished or being able to crack up or clown around sometimes is a good thing because it’s good for everyone because it releases a bit of tension built so it makes sure you’re not being too heady about things.”

“I pulled Shai’s pants down on the ferris wheel,” he laughed. “ I probably shouldn’t have done that, but [it was] a way of lightening things up. And I didn’t look, obviously.”

3) And he has some…interesting….fears

In the film, Theo James’s character Four is known for not being afraid of much, but in reality, James has some rather interesting fears.

“Dumbledore and Gandolf,” he said. “Making mojitos together.”

We had to admit, that does sound a little bit terrifying.

4) Shailene Woodley would choose to be…factionless?

We weren’t surprised when Woodley told us she would choose Dauntless if she had to pick a faction, but we were surprised when she followed up with something else.

“I would choose Dauntless because I love adrenaline and I love adventure and I love when you’re given a challenge and you have to sort of be brave to overcome it,” she said. “But I would choose to become factionless when it became too negative.”

5) Kissing your (movie) brother isn’t as awkward as you’d think

In “Divergent,” Woodley’s brother Caleb is played by up-and-coming star Ansel Elgort. This summer, the pair will act together again in the tearjerker “The Fault in Our Stars,” which pairs Elgort as her love interest.

If you thought the transition from on-screen brother to on-screen lover might be awkward, think again.

“It was really lovely actually. Ansel and I got to know each other very well in ‘Divergent’ and we sort of naturally have a sibling love for one and other,” she explained. “And so to go from a movie like that where we had a pre-established relationship to ‘Fault’ where there were a lot of vulnerable scenes and there was a lot of sensitive arenas to have that comfortability was key. I feel like it made the movie sort of what it is.”

6) Shailene Woodley loves hugs

Even though Woodley and James were late to arrive to the premiere (thanks to a typical winter commute between Chicago and Toronto), they took time to connect with fans, and Woodley event went as far to hug every person (and we mean Every.Single.Person) she came in contact with.

"We've got a set amount of time in our lives, you know. You might as well make every conversation count," she told The Hollywood Reporter about her love for getting close. "So that's like the hug. It's kind of like, 'Hey, I'm real. You're real. Let's connect.'"
