‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ reboot in development, with ‘edgy’ superhero twist

Every once in a while an odd bit of news like this comes along that reminds us all how desperate for ideas Hollywood can be sometimes. (OK, most of the time.) According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is giving "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" the reboot treatment.

But this is not some simple rehash of ideas. Instead, the Sabrina character is being totally re-imagined with an "edgy" superhero twist. Huh?

The project, still very early in development, is described as a story about a young girl dealing with the discovery of incredible powers. The studio is said to be modelling the film as an origin story like the one found in "Spider-Man."

It sounds like an interesting spin, but things gets even weirder. To add a romantic dimension to the film, Sabrina's faithful feline sidekick, Salem, will go from a being a wise-cracking former Warlock stuck in the body of a cat to a handsome prince who has been transformed into a kitty. A superhero-cat love story. (Finally!)

The "edgy" film is a far cry from Sabrina's humble origins. The teenaged witch began as an Archie Comics spin-off in the 1960s, spawning an animated series in the '70s, and a popular sitcom in the mid-'90s. The sitcom lasted seven seasons and starred Melissa Joan Hart as the titular magic-wielding teenager. It was all very lighthearted stuff, so giving the character a darker spin in the style of the "Twilight" series might be the only way to make her viable for today's audiences. Sony has their work cut out for them.

The real question here is: What's the name of the spell that undoes terrible ideas? Someone needs to cast that, pronto.
