Oscars 2014: Ellen's #Selfie Wins Internet, Breaks Twitter

By Lilian Min

If you only remember one thing from Sunday night's 86th Academy Awards, let it be the selfie of the century.

Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres is no stranger to Twitter, but she really upped her game during the telecast with the most retweeted photo of all time. She set the tone during her opening monologue, taking a #blurry snap on stage, but about halfway through the ceremony, she walked into the audience and asked some of her celeb friends to hop in for a selfie. And oh boy, did she get her wish.

From left to right: half of Jared Leto's face, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ellen, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o, Nyong'o's brother Peter, Angelina Jolie.

Not pictured: Liza Minnelli. She really tried.

Before she snapped the shot, DeGeneres challenged Twitter to make the pic the most retweeted photo in history. Within the first hour, she beat Barack Obama's most shared tweet around elections — racking up more than 1 million retweets and 450,000 favorites for her star-studded snapshot. And right after Ellen's selfie went up, Twitter even went down for a while.

That's not the only selfie she took. This second shot hasn't gone up yet, but uh, this one's probably gonna do well too, especially since Benedict Cumberbatch is in it.
