How much does Thor’s hammer weigh?

Anyone who has seen a Marvel movie in the past five years knows the awesome power of Thor’s hammer. It can bat baddies into the stratosphere and even give the Hulk quit a wallop.

Moviegoers have seen the big man’s hammer “Mjolnir” (don’t bother trying to pronounce it) in action in three films now: “Thor,” “The Avengers,” and most recently “Thor: The Dark World.” (OK, it's four films, if you want to count the post-credits scene from “Iron Man 2.”) We all know this fictional weapon is extremely powerful, but a new video explains just how strong - and insanely dangerous - the hammer of Thor would be if it existed in real life. Jake Roper from YouTube channel Vsauce put together a handy, fact-filled explanation of how heavy the hammer would be if it had actually been forged from a dying star.

So how how much does the hammer weigh?

Based on Mjolnir’s dimensions and neutron star construction (the densest and heaviest material in the known universe), Roper estimates that the hammer weighs in at a thunderous 4,634,850,000,000,000 kilograms (that’s nearly five quadrillion kg!). A sugar cube-sized piece of the material would weigh more than all of humanity, so you can imagine how much a giant Asgardian hammer-sized block of the stuff would weigh.

Then there’s the horrifying fact that if Thor dropped his hammer, an explosion would ensue that would be the equivalent to 1.3 million times the largest nuclear bomb ever detonated -- or about the size of the asteroid collision that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Even if the demi-god managed to hang on to the thing and not annihilate mankind through clumsiness, there’s still the issue of the intense gravitational pull that Mjolnir would have. If you were anywhere near the hammer, you would be pulled towards it at more than the speed of sound and be vapourized.

The mighty comic book weapon carries the inscription, "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." But obviously it should really say, "Whosoever holds this is undoubtedly a crazy person and should stay the heck away from Earth!"

Now that we know how much Mjolnir weighs, all we have to say to Thor is: please don’t drop your hammer, dude!
