They're back! With "The Expendables 2" exploding into theatres today, trailers for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone's next action projects have hit the web. What year is this again?
Arnie's "The Last Stand" and Sly's "Bullet to the Head" look like gleeful throwbacks to the action packed mid-'80s, when big muscles and even bigger guns were kings at the box office.
After wrapping up his stint as governor of California a few years ago, Schwarzenegger dipped his toes back into the movie game with a cameo appearance in the first "Expendables" movie. Now, the sequel to the action hero ensemble and "Last Stand" mark the former Governator's true return to the action movie arena.
Directed by Korean hot property Jee-woon Kim ("I Saw the Devil"), "The Last Stand" puts Schwarzenegger in the role of an aging small town sheriff forced to take on a violent Mexican drug cartel. It's a classic action movie fare layered with the requisite "I'm getting too old for this s---!" angle that's a necessity for the film's 65-year-old star. "The Last Stand" co-stars Forest Whitaker ("Last King of Scotland") and Jackass-turned-actor Johnny Knoxville. See the trailer below.
But Arnie won't be the only one holding the action hero torch high next year. Veteran genre filmmaker Walter Hill ("48 Hrs.," "Red Heat") directs Stallone in "Bullet to the Head." Stallone plays an over-the-hill hitman out for revenge after his partner is killed on the job. The movie co-stars Sung Kang ("Fast & Furious") as Stallone's unlikely law enforcement ally, and "Conan the Barbarian" remake star Jason Momoa, as the film's heavy. Watch the axe-tastic trailer below.
It's a safe bet that the Schwarzenegger and Stallone will be playing "aging ______s" from here on out, but their respective film projects seem to be embracing the fact that the two are getting a little long in tooth for the genre. At the same time, if the trailers for "The Last Stand" and "Bullet to the Head" have made one thing clear, it's that the duo have still look like they've got what it takes to carry an action picture.
After "The Last Stand" and "Bullet to the Head," Schwarzenegger and Stallone are set to re-team for "The Tomb," a prison breakout movie co-starring Jim Caviezel and 50 Cent. But if you can't wait until 2013 to see the pair on the big screen together, you can always go see "The Expendables 2" this weekend.
