Kids in the Hall to reunite for ‘Brain Candy’ live-reading

Good news for fans of the Kids in the Hall: The famed sketch troupe (made up of Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson) will reunite at the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival on March 11 for a live reading of "Brain Candy," their one and only big screen outing.

Although it was very poorly received by critics at the time, “Brain Candy” has become something of a cult classic for many Canadians since its 1996 release. Told as only the Kids in the Hall can, the film follows a scientist who creates a pill that cures depression completely. Unfortunately (and quite predictably) this wonder pill has a few unintended side effects. In keeping with their sketch comedy roots, each Kids in the Hall member played multiple roles in the film.

Composer Craig Northey, who scored “Brain Candy,” along with Chris Murphy and Gregory Macdonald of Sloan will provide musical accompaniment for the reading. And as a special bonus for fans, the group will also unveil the movie's never-before-seen original ending after the live performance.

Foley, McDonald, McCulloch, McKinney, and Thompson may be well past their comedic prime, but this is a rare opportunity to see them perform together once again - and to see them perform something that they created at the height of their fame and popularity no less. It's the closest many Kids in the Hall fans will ever get to a true "Brain Candy" sequel.
