Jeff Daniels:‘Dumb and Dumber To’ starts filming in September, calls script ‘hysterical’

According to half of one of cinema’s most witless duos, fans hoping to see big screen buffoons Harry and Lloyd back in action in the long awaited “Dumb and Dumber To” are going to have to wait just a tiny bit longer.

Contrary to previous reports that said the “Dumb and Dumber” sequel would start shooting as soon as next month, actor Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom”) revealed that cameras likely won’t start rolling on the Farrelly Bros. project until September.

"I'll believe it’s happening when I'm actually there staring at Jim Carrey,” Daniels told late night host Jimmy Fallon this week, “but it looks like we're starting in September."

In the 1994 buddy comedy classic, Daniels played clueless dolt Harry Dunne opposite Jim Carrey’s boneheaded Lloyd Christmas. Both actors are set to reprise their perennially dumbfounded roles in the upcoming sequel.

In addition to confirming the start date for “Dumb and Dumber To,” Daniels called the film’s script “hysterical” and offered up some details about what Harry and Lloyd are up to twenty years later.

“We’re middle-aged -- we’re not pretending we aren’t. We’re middle-aged and we’re still that stupid.”

“Dumb and Dumber” has become something of a cult hit since it was first released, spawning an animated series and a semi-official 2003 prequel “Dumb and Dumberer” (Carrey, Daniels, and the Farrellys were not involved). Peter and Bobby Farrelly have been developing the sequel since 2011, but had some difficulty locking down both Carrey and Daniels at the same time due to busy schedules. Even after getting all the pieces in place, "Dumb and Dumber To" still almost didn't happen, after studio Warner Bros. suddenly walked away from the project last month, leaving everyone involved in a brief limbo until Universal picked up the reins a mere week later.

We're still not quite sure if revisiting a bona fide comedy classic like "Dumb and Dumber" is such a great idea, but we'll reserve judgement until the finished product hits theatres next year. Appropriately, "Dumb and Dumber To" will be released in 2014 -- the twentieth anniversary of the original film.
