‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ casts singer Rita Ora as Mia Grey

As filming gets underway this week in Vancouver, the cast of “Fifty Shades of Grey” continues to grow. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s big-screen adaptation of E.L. James’ bestselling erotic novel just added singer-songwriter Rita Ora to the mix, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

She joins the likes of Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Eloise Mumford, Luke Grimes, Jennifer Ehle, Victor Rasuk, and Max Martini.

The London-raised, Kosovo-born R&B artist will play Mia Grey, the bubbly adopted sister of Christian (Dornan) and Elliot Grey (Grimes). “Fifty Shades of Grey” follows student Anastasia Steele (Johnson) as she becomes embroiled in an intense relationship with controlling billionaire Christian Grey.

So, what do you know Ora from?

The 23-year-old was signed by Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation back in 2009, and is probably best known for her chart-topping hits “R.I.P." and “How We Do." Though the singer isn’t exactly known for her acting chops, she’s no stranger to being in front of the camera: Ora had a bit part in the 2004 Brit drama “Spivs,” played herself on an episode of “90210,” and made a cameo in “Fast & Furious 6” earlier this year.

Mia Grey is described in the book as a curvaceous woman with raven-hair and a bob haircut. No mention is made of her race, but that hasn’t stopped some “Fifty Shades” fans from taking issue with Ora’s casting, mostly based on her skin colour. Ora is an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo in Eastern Europe.

“She is described as being an all American type,” one fan posted on E.L. James’ official Instagram account. “A white brunette. Rita Ora is pretty but she doesn't fit the description.”

“She is supposed to Caucasian, raven color hair and tall,” another posted. “I think they missed the boat on MG.”

Some in the Twittersphere also seemed upset by the singer’s casting.

The overall reaction to Ora's casting has been mostly positive, though, with many on Twitter and other social networks congratulating the singer on her new gig.

What do you think? Is Rita Ora right for the role of Mia Grey?

“Fifty Shades of Grey” will arrive theatres on Feb.13, 2015 -- just in time for Valentine’s Day!
