New ‘Fantastic Four’ Cast Named, Reactions Torch the Internet

The newest squad of Marvel movie superheroes has been assembled now that Fox has finally picked its cast quartet for "The Fantastic Four," and, as one should probably come to expect in today's climate of insta-feedback, the fan reactions are very split at the outset.

As long suspected, "Fruitvale Station" and "Friday Night Lights" actor Michael B. Jordan will become Johnny Storm, "The Human Torch" for the pic, re-teaming with his "Chronicle" director Josh Trank for the project. After months of speculation and tongue-in-cheek responses to the rumor, this is not surprising — or news, really.

However, the three add-ons that join Trank's team of cosmic radiation-exposed astronauts do come as a bit of a jolt. According to Variety, Kate Mara ("House of Cards") joins the fold as Johnny's sister Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman. No details have yet emerged as to how that relationship will be presented in the reboot, though many suspect adoption or half-parentage will come into play.

Meanwhile, Miles Teller — who recently starred with Jordan in the bromantic comedy "That Awkward Moment" and will re-team with him again for a new heist flick by director Tom Gormican — comes in as Reid "Mr. Fantastic" Richards, a scientific genius who acts as a father figure for the group. Despite his ability to stretch and twist his body every which way, Richards is a relatively subdued guy. (Note: There's talk that Teller's "Divergent" series obligations might render a kink in his "Fantastic" involvement, though.)

Finally, Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, reportedly will be portrayed by Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliot"). His is a character filled with self-loathing and anger over his monstrous, rock-like appearance, and Bell's experience with motion-capture performance in Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin" might just be a weighty feather in his cap for snagging this role. See for yourself:

Both Mara and Jordan creatively confirmed their roles via social media on Thursday:

Jordan posted a rather symbolic photo on Instagram with the note, "FLAME ON!!"

Naturally, the trusty Twitterverse had plenty to say about these selections. Some were, shall we say, not so impressed by the additions.

Not everyone was e-groaning over the selections, though. There were plenty of tweeters who got pretty enthused over Mara, Teller, and Bell joining Jordan for the super-powered foursome.

What do you have to say about your new "Fantastic Four"? Are they indeed fantastic? Or are you ready to throw 'em the way of Doctor Doom already? And how do you think they'll compare to the Jessica Alba and Chris Evans iterations of 2005 and 2007 (see clip below)? Hit the comments and let us know.

"The Fantastic Four" will hit theaters on June 19, 2015, joining a Marvel-heavy summer schedule which already includes "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (May 1, 2015) and "Ant-Man" (July 17, 2015).
