Everything is awesome: A ‘Lego Movie’ sequel is ‘all-but-guaranteed’

Some fantastic news with a big fat asterisk this week for fans of "The Lego Movie." A sequel is on the way!

Thanks to great reviews and a stellar opening weekend at the box office ($69 million, to be exact), a follow-up to Warner Bros’ brick-based family comedy already seemed pretty likely, but now the sequel sounds like a sure thing.

Citing a source within WB, Los Angeles Times film writer Amy Kaufman tweeted the following:

No word yet on whether directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller would return for a second installment, but trying to make another “Lego Movie” without them would likely be a mistake.

The pair handed off the reins to “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” in order to make “21 Jump Street,” and the result was a somewhat lacklustre sequel. Lord and Miller, who wrote and directed “The Lego Movie,” were a driving force behind making the film more than just an insufferable toy commercial. Sure, “The Lego Movie” was still very much a glorified toy advert for the Danish construction toy, but Lord and Miller imbued it with a surprising amount of humour and heart.

Despite an open schedule post-"22 Jump Street," there one worrying sign that Lord and Miller won’t be involved in a “Lego Movie” sequel: Warner Bros. have reportedly already hired two screenwriters to work on “The Lego Movie 2.” According to The Wrap, writers Jared Stern (“The Internship”) and Michelle Morgan (“Girl Most Likely”) have been tasked with scripting the LEGO sequel. Given their respective track records (neither "The Internship" nor "Girl Most Likely" was well-received), it's safe to say that the "Lego Movie" sequel could be in slightly better hands.
